    Any good ramp polishing tutorials?

I shot a few mags across my Colt Defender on Friday, all FMJ, and it was flawless. I know, however, that JHP's will cause a failure every third mag or so.

I suspect that a good polishing of the feed ramp would take care of the problem. Where can I find some good instructions for this? Or is it something that should only be done by a gunsmith?

I keep hearing warnings about sanding the finish off the ramp, thereby ruining the gun.

Is there a way to "slick" the ramp without affecting the metal?

+1 and only use finger pressure, you don't want to throw off the feed angle.

I've polished many a ramp and have never had a problem. I first use 400 grit sandpaper, followed by 600 and then 2000. I give it a final polish with an old rag and simichrome metal polish. All done by hand...no machinery. Result is a mirror finish.
On my carry gun I also polished the breech face. It feeds flawlessly even if I manually cycle the slide very slowly.

ive done it with a light sanding with 600 followed by the same with 1200...it looks like its been chromed...you are not trying to remove material...just geta nice smooth shine...if you change something you are going to far...

i had problems with my defender i sent it in to colt and to me it seems they sanded some of the ramp to give it that polish look, i have heard the defender being aluminum frame you should not sand it becuase you will ruin the coat on ramp but after see what the facotry did i do see it sill strong and coated well becuase after shoot 185 gr speer dot gold (the ammo that was causing the feed failure) the ramp had nearly no residue not it and easy to clean. Also the ramp seemed to be a bit off center or not semetricail but hey it shoots well now and colt said if i have any problems to keep sending them my gun which i hope i never have any problems any more

Someone told me that this is the way to test it; slowly pull the slide back and make sure that the round will feed and not hang.

Leave the ramp alone. Chances are great that is not the problem.
