A good in between from Kimber plastic and steel is the aluminum MSH from VZGrips.

Springfields have a locking mechanism in their main spring housings to "render the gun safe" and it makes a complete strip of the gun different than the original design, I would replace the main spring housing as I don't want that silly lock making the gun different than my others.
Thanks for the info! I'll definitely pick one up.

Another 1911 question. I have a a kimber magazine that found laying around in my "Assorted gun stuff" drawer. I've never used it. It came with my Colt 1911 that I bought used but my dad bought my a couple of Mccormick power mags for my birthday the same day. My power mags hold 8 rounds and seem to have what I can only describe as a extended base plate on them. The Kimber mag on the other hand has a flat base plate and fits flush with the bottom of the gun. The odd thing is that the Kimber mag holds 8 rounds. I have another 1911 mag (no name) with the thin flat base plate that holds 7. Is this normal? I thought all the mags that fit flush with the handle were 7 rounders.

    That's "normal"

The original mag held 7 and fit flush, the newer 8rd mags have a chopped skirt on the follower to allow the 8th round and still fit flush. Elongated tubes will allow the 8th round without chopping the skirt.

Bah, Means I'll have to order 2 new mags as the one the springer comes with are 7 rounders. Or I guess I could always use the 8 rounder kimber I have and then carry one of my mcormicks as my spare.

i tried one of those VZ aluminum one's in my champion operator, and it left a huge gap between the top of the MSH and the bottom of the grip safety so i sent it back. you could see all the internals through that gap. it might fit yours differently, just a heads up.

also, on midwayusa, there's a $12.99 s&w aluminum MSH. pretty cheap, and gets good reviews.

    thank you

to take out the MSH--take off the slide, cock the hammer, stick a pin through the hole at the top back of the housing to capture the mainspring, then decock the hammer, knock the pin out of the bottom of the frame, and it slides on out.

now the sear spring might want to jump out, so wrap a rubber band around the grip safety to keep it engaged/activated. makes things a little easier.

Since you're not going to pay attention to the price, let me throw a wrench in the works. Call around and see if you can find one of these to lay your hands on. You just might change direction.

    ^^that's quite a price jump from a sub $900 colt/springfield armory to a $1,600 DW.

....nice, but not worth the cost IMHO.

    Little more to it...

I have used McCormick polymer MSH and haven't had an issue with one yet.
You also have to remove the parts inside the old MSH and place them in the new MSH. Make sure you wear safety glasses.

Agreed. I'm not worrying about cost (with in reason). That's just way to much of a jump for me.

Yep! I guess I was thinking the whole assembly would be replaced but there's no need to do that at all.
