I was wondering if anyone knew if I could add a night sight to my SW 642 here is a pick of the front sight.
I figured that if I could add one it would be pretty cool.

I'm posting to see where this goes. I have a SW 642 and never heard or knew night sights were possible to add.

the reason I ask is because it looks like you could just push the sight out I did not know if anyone had tried or even thought of it.

On the standard 642,(1.78 inch barrel) I think that someone would have to mill a slot in the barrel to install a front night sight, since the standard sight is integral with the barrel. I'm not sure if there is enough metal there to do that or not. The new 642 with the 2.5 inch barrel comes with a pinned front sight, which can be swapped out for a night sight fairly easily.
This website shows how night sights are normally installed on S&W J frames that have the pinned front sight:

It looks like it would take a lot of modification to install a night sight on a regular 642. Probably better off to buy a model that is compatible with night sights straight from the factory. Don't know if you like Rugers, but I love my little LCR with the boot grip and front night sight. It's got a lot better trigger than a stock J frame as well.

This is why I like the S&W 640. It's a little heavier, because it's made of stainless steel, but it's still a light little revolver. Installation of an XS Big Dot tritium front sight can be done by the gunsmith at your local gun store in no time.

Here's a good article about how to improve the sights on a snub. It talks a bit about replacement sights, but mostly about how to improve what you've got.

That XS big dot with the triji ability looks like the way to go.
