In the absence of already knowing exactly what you want, I think what you should get; should be dictated by how you intend to carry it. If that is IWB, then I'd definitely recommend something single stack..Colt Defender maybe or a Sig P239.

Two Recommendations. If you want to spend all of your money get a Kimber Ultra Carry in .45 ACP. They are accurate, reliable and weigh about 31 ounces loaded. IMHO, you can't beat the light consistent trigger of a decent M1911. I also like the safeties. If you want $ left over for ammo and a nice holster (or two) look at the Springfield XD in 40 Cal. You can carry the compact or subcompact reasonable well (they are thicker than the Kimber and the grip will be longer on the compact). Reliable, accurate, trigger similar to a a Glock trigger BUT you have a "normal" grip angle and an extra safety (grip safety). Good luck!!
