Bored with my CCW

Someone posted about getting bored with their CCW recently and it got me to thinking about my firearms. I've got quite a few handguns of various types and calibers. I rotate shooting them at the range and rotate carrying them based on attire, situation, or just to mix it up. Most everything I have and carry is fairly interesting in one way or another. The SP101 is a beautiful revolver. The old S&W 49 is an antique with character. The P95 fits my hand like a glove. The XD40sc has great feel, lines, and is surprisingly accurate. All of them have something unique or interesting.....Except for one.

I have one CCW that I end up carrying a lot that is actually quite boring. It's nothing fancy or special. It's not a popular brand, it's not flashy or sexy. It's actually rather unattractive in its design and finish. It doesn't get any oooo's or aaaahhhhh's from my carrying buddies.

What is it? The Bersa Thunder 9 Ultra Compact. It is as predictable and monotonous as a great weapon should be. No surprises. I've got four 13 round mags and carry one in the pipe with it de-cocked and safety off. Compact size with great capacity. Rugged, durable, reliable, safe. It was built for durable function and purpose with no regard for any of the stuff mentioned above. It's all black and was used when I bought it, so it already had enough carry wear that I didn't have to worry about it.

******** All of these reasons why it is boring are ironically the reasons it is one of my most carried handguns. After I thought about it a bit, a boring handgun is a beautiful thing...even if it is unattractive.

Boring? Define that. You know,,,sometimes "boring" could be good or bad...depending. Some of the best carried pistols might become boring...the term and definition need some support at this point. "Nothing fancy or special". That pretty much defines my whole gamut of CC pistols. None of them are fancy, and they are only special because I fancy them for CC. It's my life depending upon them. You have something ultimately reliable and versatile? How could that become boring? Monotonous maybe....but is that a bad thing? Maybe your favorite carry pistol should become boring after a while...since you've relied on it for so long and never been tested with it. is this the way CC pistols could become "boring"....because you've never had to use it for the purpose intended? How impressed will your friends be when you save your life with the pistol you've chosen (that's not pretty). All in all, what do you truly think about your friends scrutiny about what you carry for personal protection? That's a personal decision....not one that should be made available and open inquiry for others to take a stab at.....IMO. You may put more faith in your peers than you do yourself. In this instance, you'll have to decide whether they are your peers, or that you are actually confident in what you are doing on your own. I'm just the messenger. I don't want to see anyone get hurt.

Ram Rod, what you said was actually the point I was trying to make in my post. I carry it a lot, not because it is (insert descriptive word here, such as: popular, attractive, expensive, flashy, etc.). It actually is NONE of those things. I carry it often because it is pure reliable purpose and function. I was trying to take off on another person's post about them getting bored with their CCW and show how even if you carry the unpopular or unpretty of CCWs, boring is actually a beautiful thing. I've got a lot of popular brands and models, that are very nicely finished and expensive and I carry the least so of any of them. Kind of like the guy that has several nice fancy cars and chooses to drive his old beat up (insert your favorite brand here) truck for many of the same reasons. It's a beautiful thing.

My apologies. Maybe I didn't read the entire post and perhaps not in the right context. I'm not sure what's going on these days....I'm focusing on keywords more than anything I guess. I need to slow down. Thanks for the reminder.

Boring is sometimes, a really good thing.

So you've come to save me? No matter, as long as you agree. Thing is......I think we've missed the point.

My boring, nothing out of the ordinary, always reliable, always working, always on my hip Glock 26 is as beautiful as an ugly gun can be.

In your context, I sense that by boring you mean dependable and uneventful. Many things we have are that way, and change is not necessarily as important as appreciation.OMO

I think most have keyed into what I was trying to say. I went back and highlighted some of my original post comments. My most carried weapon is actually the one that might be considered the most unattractive, unpopular, and even boring by some standards and there's a very good reason. A CCW shouldn't necessarily be about popularity, flash, etc. It's about reliability and function. It just happens my ugly duckling is quite the swan in that regard.

When it comes to my CCW, BORING IS BEAUTIFUL!

Think about it in terms of a relationship. The exciting ones aren't always the most desirable. The long, steady, dependable, predictable ones are in it for the long haul.

My wife and I have been together for 25 years (married 17). There aren't many surprises anymore (other than her telling me she was pregnant a couple of years ago), but I have come to greatly value being able to anticipate how she will handle things and react. The excitement of unpredictability is something I prefer to live without. As long as you can make each other laugh, it isn't boring. We laugh at ourselves a lot.

Thanks for that post. I agree with all the replies. Going to a new church this morning, and after reading here, think I'll be packin my most boring gun along. The g26.

I'll gladly accept donations of any pistols that have become boring for any folks on here.

Yeah Glocks are boring, dull, black I like em...

My 1911 is a bit flashy and stainless but...well it works 100% for me so I guess it's boring too. I don't like exciting pistols. No thanks to jams, misfires, and other mechanical flaws.

Interesting way of looking at things. Nothing exciting about my S&W snubbie. But I will definitely say my trusty Keltec p3at is definitely not "boring" to shoot, painful maybe, but not boring.

After being shot at and having folks attempt to blow me up, boring is my very bestest friend!

I get it.

We all appreciate the pretty firearms, and probably have some as well. The nickel smith revolvers, the tricked out 1911s, wood grips, polished slides, etc. For me, the one of mine that gets the nod more than any is the plain jane girl next door pistol. It may not be the centerfold of any gun porn threads, but it's everything I could ever want and need in a CCW. So what if it's an ugly ducking, that's why they call it concealed carry. If it ever needs to see the light of day, it won't be for a beauty contest.

Thanks to all that read and replied. I hope you got what I was trying to say. Your choice in firearms is a personal one. Find what fits you and meets your carry and defensive needs even if it isn't the "in" thing. If the time ever comes that you need it, it's just you and it.

Take care.

My EDC is boring. It goes bang everytime I pull the trigger. It hits what I point it at.

There are no exciting failures to feed or failures to extract.

It doesn't get in my way whenever I am doing something. In fact most of the time I forget I am EDCing, I am aware It is there I just don't think about it.
It is Glock plain without embellishments. I have no desire to tuck it in $500 custom holster and wear it to a Bar-B-Que for everyone to admire. As with most other wall flowers it will set on the sidelines unnoticed, until it gets asked to dance.
But don't be surprise as it sure can Boogie

For me, "boring" can be associated with "extreme familiarity". I shoot my carry guns the most, from a PM9 to a G19 and two 1911s. Far more than I shoot the other stuff. Why? Because I want to be the best I can be with them and to ensure they are in tip top condition. Sure, I get "bored" with them...because I shoot them all the time!
