    Bored with my CCW

Someone posted about getting bored with their CCW recently and it got me to thinking about my firearms. I've got quite a few handguns of various types and calibers. I rotate shooting them at the range and rotate carrying them based on attire, situation, or just to mix it up. Most everything I have and carry is fairly interesting in one way or another. The SP101 is a beautiful revolver. The old S&W 49 is an antique with character. The P95 fits my hand like a glove. The XD40sc has great feel, lines, and is surprisingly accurate. All of them have something unique or interesting.....Except for one.

I have one CCW that I end up carrying a lot that is actually quite boring. It's nothing fancy or special. It's not a popular brand, it's not flashy or sexy. It's actually rather unattractive in its design and finish. It doesn't get any oooo's or aaaahhhhh's from my carrying buddies.

What is it? The Bersa Thunder 9 Ultra Compact. It is as predictable and monotonous as a great weapon should be. No surprises. I've got four 13 round mags and carry one in the pipe with it de-cocked and safety off. Compact size with great capacity. Rugged, durable, reliable, safe. It was built for durable function and purpose with no regard for any of the stuff mentioned above. It's all black and was used when I bought it, so it already had enough carry wear that I didn't have to worry about it.

******** All of these reasons why it is boring are ironically the reasons it is one of my most carried handguns. After I thought about it a bit, a boring handgun is a beautiful thing...even if it is unattractive.

I would put Glocks in this same camp. Boring, plain, reliable, and consistent. Exactly what you want in a carry weapon.

Boring? Define that. You know,,,sometimes "boring" could be good or bad...depending. Some of the best carried pistols might become boring...the term and definition need some support at this point. "Nothing fancy or special". That pretty much defines my whole gamut of CC pistols. None of them are fancy, and they are only special because I fancy them for CC. It's my life depending upon them. You have something ultimately reliable and versatile? How could that become boring? Monotonous maybe....but is that a bad thing? Maybe your favorite carry pistol should become boring after a while...since you've relied on it for so long and never been tested with it. is this the way CC pistols could become "boring"....because you've never had to use it for the purpose intended? How impressed will your friends be when you save your life with the pistol you've chosen (that's not pretty). All in all, what do you truly think about your friends scrutiny about what you carry for personal protection? That's a personal decision....not one that should be made available and open inquiry for others to take a stab at.....IMO. You may put more faith in your peers than you do yourself. In this instance, you'll have to decide whether they are your peers, or that you are actually confident in what you are doing on your own. I'm just the messenger. I don't want to see anyone get hurt.

Ram Rod, what you said was actually the point I was trying to make in my post. I carry it a lot, not because it is (insert descriptive word here, such as: popular, attractive, expensive, flashy, etc.). It actually is NONE of those things. I carry it often because it is pure reliable purpose and function. I was trying to take off on another person's post about them getting bored with their CCW and show how even if you carry the unpopular or unpretty of CCWs, boring is actually a beautiful thing. I've got a lot of popular brands and models, that are very nicely finished and expensive and I carry the least so of any of them. Kind of like the guy that has several nice fancy cars and chooses to drive his old beat up (insert your favorite brand here) truck for many of the same reasons. It's a beautiful thing.

My apologies. Maybe I didn't read the entire post and perhaps not in the right context. I'm not sure what's going on these days....I'm focusing on keywords more than anything I guess. I need to slow down. Thanks for the reminder.

So you've come to save me? No matter, as long as you agree. Thing is......I think we've missed the point.

I love boring. From my EDCs to my lifestyle, which I've gone to great lengths to allow myself to be home every night by dinner time with my family. I thank God for all of the boring things in my life.

I should think the last thing anybody wants is an "exciting" CCW.

In your context, I sense that by boring you mean dependable and uneventful. Many things we have are that way, and change is not necessarily as important as appreciation.OMO

I think most have keyed into what I was trying to say. I went back and highlighted some of my original post comments. My most carried weapon is actually the one that might be considered the most unattractive, unpopular, and even boring by some standards and there's a very good reason. A CCW shouldn't necessarily be about popularity, flash, etc. It's about reliability and function. It just happens my ugly duckling is quite the swan in that regard.

When it comes to my CCW, BORING IS BEAUTIFUL!

Think about it in terms of a relationship. The exciting ones aren't always the most desirable. The long, steady, dependable, predictable ones are in it for the long haul.

I'm glad this concept only works for guns.

I'd never tell my girlfriend that she was "boring", especially if she was reliable and functional. ..
What we've got here is failure to communicate.
