    Best 1911

Ok, thinking about the possibility of adding a 3-4" 1911 to the family. Love my Colt 5" but want a smaller brother. I used to own a colt defender and it just didn't jive with me so I am back in the market to fill that void in the safe. This wouldn't be my EDC (45c M&P is), but a change of pace gun for special occations. I have no bias to any company so don't hold back on suggestions.

I favor Kimbers. I had a Pro-Carry HD-II in .38 Super with 4" barrel and upgraded to another in .45 ACP. Both are fine shooters.

I kind of have a soft spot for the springfield GI micro. I don't know why, I just think it's cute.

I highly recommend the Commander size - 4" barrel (some are 4-1/4"). Excellent compromise between size and capability. Still 8+1 capacity, a few ounces lighter than a 5-inch gun (lighter still if you opt for an alloy frame), and the shorter barrel helps it clear leather a snick faster/easier than the full-size gun - very helpful if you carry it in an IWB holster.

There are some "hybrids" around with the shorter, Officer's Model grip length and Commander-length barrel. These give up a round in capacity but are a bit more concealable with the shorter butt. I prefer the full grip length, myself.

Have you ever considered the SIG P220 SAO? I hear they make an abbreviated version for carry. My P220 SAO IS my 1911 for now.

Nighthawk is one of the best (along with Wilson) and my personal preference. I've had three, sold one and have another on order. I've owned Brown, Wilson, Kimber, Springer, etc., and Nighthawk has been the best with amazing CS. Anyone looking for a very good 1911, I always suggest Nighthawk and Wilson.

I have nothing against the semi-custom guns but for half the price of a Baer and a third the price of a Brown or Wilson you can have a Colt Commander in either steel or LW version. When, and if, one of my Colts lets me down I may look up to something "better". Besides, you're already a Colt owner.

Don't wanna break a $1000 with this one. I will be shopping the used market as well. Lots of good suggestions here thanks.

Buddy has a S&W 1911 PD, tha's a lightweight commander size. Thousands of rounds, loves it. It's lighter than my Rock Island Officer's size and still less recoil?. I've had 2 S&W autos and was of the opinion the should stick w/ revolvers. This gun has changed my mind.

    Stay safe.
