I'm thinking about getting a EAA Witness Compact in 10mm. Has anyone owned one before and what do you think about it? Also, what are your thoughts on the 10mm round. I'd also consider getting the pistol in 9mm or .40, but I'd love to try a 10mm.

I am a big fan of the 10mm, own several but do not own anything from EEA. They seem to be an entry level weapon...can't help you there, but the 10mm is awesome!

They're made about 80 miles up the road from me. What little I've read on forums (I take gun magazine reviews with a grain of salt) gives it mixed reviews. But then, I see the same mixed reviews on many other makes, from low- to high-end.
Have you had to chance to inspect and handle one? Or shoot? That would be a big plus. Other than that, do as much research as you can.

I've got a steel Compact in .45 and have had no problems. Don't have many rounds through it, but really like it. It is a tad heavy.
In my opinion, for durability, and all things considered, if you want a compact pit-bull, go with the g29. And use Winchester silvertips or buy from double tap ammo to get the full strength stuff.
I seen some EEA as CZ Knock offs ; )

Here is a gun review of the Eaa .45, they were very positive of it overall, and they are not that expensive for what you get.
I have heard similar things said about the company as a whole.

Review: Tanfoglio (EAA) Witness .4526 January, 2010
Tanfoglio is an Italian manufacturer of handguns based in the “Valley of the Gun” outside of Brescia (there are several manufactures located there, including Beretta.) One of their primary products is a copy of the CZ-75, called alternately the Combat or the Witness. It is imported into the US by European American Armory and is usually called the EAA Witness. It is available in .22LR, 9mm, .40S&W, 10mm, and .45ACP.
I have not fired the other calibers of this pistol, so we will focus solely on the .45 Witness. Simply put: this is one of the best .45s you can buy for sub-$500 (although prices have climbed some with the recent nonsense.)
