I have owned both firearms and shot them extensively. The XD was a great little firearm, super dependable and pretty accurate. I just thought it was a hair blocky and has a high bore axis. I like the M&P9c better for sure. The M&P is the EDC if that tells you anything.

There is alot of great handguns... Now I pick XD for the reason i like the Small size, avaible part to make it work better for me. The backstrap safety is like have 1911 in the hand... Yep i own a 1911...
I also have the XDm... Back to XD, In the right holster i more or less forget i have it on... I installed a spring kit making my XD have a softer pull, 7lbs is stock, mine is 4.5 lbs on the trigger pull...

    Hope this helps..

XD. I've shot both, and they are both great guns. It's a close call, but the nod goes to the XD for a few reasons. The XD's trigger is alot nicer. The pull on the MP just felt "cheap". It wasnt as smooth and progressive as the XD. I can tell absolutely the moment the XD trigger will break. Not quite with the MP. The XD's backstrap safety is a good touch. Lastly, the XD just felt better in the hand. Obviously that is very subjective... You cant go wrong either way though!

How about you go shoot both and see which one YOU like best.
That being said I carry an XD

I have owned them bow and at the range its an even battle for me. EDC M&P won because its less blocky and just nicer to carry IMO.

My wife picked the m&p9c over any others for her carry gun and I would be pretty hard pressed not to think that she made a fantastic choice. The trigger does feel a little different, as noted, but definitely not a deal breaker. I really enjoy shooting it.

I used to own an XD compact before the M&P's came out, loved it....still like them a lot. I think now I would get the M&P (having shot one), less blocky and I would go with .357 sig. I know you said 9mm, but those are the reasons for me.

I own both in 9mm (well, my wife owns the XD9sc), and really, it depends on your preference for the ergonomics.

I think they're both good, no questions asked. The XD fit me a little better, and you can get one for less $ usually. FWIW, the XD has one more round and having an extended mag of 16 is nice too. Can't go wrong with either.

When I was looking for my compact, I looked at both. I was partial to the XD becuase I have the service model in .40. But I liked the M&P just a tad better. Just a little thinner to carry. Either way, though I don't think you can go wrong. I like both.

Yup. Like others have said, try both of them out. If you can't get the opportunity to shoot both, then I suggest hold both of them and spend as much time as you can feeling the differences between each gun. The subtle ergonomics was what sold me on my XDsc. Both guns are really nice pistols and they both look very similar on paper, but the XD just felt better, or maybe more natural, aiming and pointing to me, so that's the one I went with. I've been very happy with my XD and I'm sure there are just as many happy M&P owners out there. The best part about your choice is you can't make a wrong one with those two to choose from!
