Talking New Lightweight Commander XSE owner's review

    LWTCommander1s.jpg LWTCommander2s.jpg

I recently bought a new Colt Lightweight Commander XSE. During my first brief shooting session I had trouble with the "factory" magazines not feeding the last round from the magazine; they would allow a nose up malfunction.

Since the first session, I installed a set of XS "Big Dot" night sights and ordered some different magazines.

The XS sights required fitting; I knew this when I purchased them, and I bought them anyway, The front sight required major fitting; I should have skipped the file & sand paper and got a Dremel tool (turned out to be a real PITA ). The rear sight wasn't difficult to install.

For the magazines, I bought Tripp 7 round factory magazines and Tripp replacement kits for the "Colt" magazines.

Today was shooting session number two. First, I was very happy that the Tripp magazines and replacement kits worked with 100% reliability. I was also extremely happy when the initial shots using my newly installed XS Big Dot sights hit where I aimed at 7 yards. Next, I tested my speed and accuracy of a "double tap" at 6 yards. I placed a 6'' circle at 18 feet (6 yards) and measured my elapsed time from 1st to 2nd shot. Typically, I'm doing very well to keep BOTH shots on the 6'' circle with a 2nd shot time around .29 sec. However, in this "test" the XS Big Dots allowed me to achieve "blazing" (for me) 2nd shot times of .19 -.21 sec. using 230 gr. factory ammunition, while keeping both shots on the 6'' circle. For SD these sights are perfect for me!

I chronographed 4 different factory loads, here is the average velocity for 5 shots:
    Remington 230 gr. JHP @ 817 fps
Federal Hydra Shok 230 gr. @ 850 fps
    Winchester Ranger T 230 gr. @ 868 fps
    Hornady XTP 185 gr. @ 904 fps

Other than the initial last round from the magazine problem, which I have solved, there have been no malfunctions.

Tripp mags are great, and you will find the Wilsons of equally good reliability.

A Lightweight Commander is just about the best carry 1911 out there!

New Colt XSE Commander 01/08. Factory mags were junk, went Wilson. Gun shot fine. I want to replace the ambi saftey with something more solid feeling as I'm a lefty.

Got the XSE SS with big dots, when I initially ordered the sights the set they sent didn't fit,I reordered and the second set didn't fit, called them back and apparently somebody was putting the wrong sights in the wrong bins, they finally sent the right set of sights and a little file work took care of the fit and finish.I carry wilson 47D 8 round mags

Beautiful 1911, thanks for the thorough review. I always wonder why quality firearms come with crap mags?

It is nice & slim, an asset for IWB. I didn't mention it, but I also used two Wilson 7 round magazines (about 15 years old) that worked fine.

Thanks. The follower in the "factory" Colt magazine is exactly like the one in my Kimber magazine which also didn't work in the Kimber. Tripp magazine has exactly the same follower in the Officers size 7 shot magazines, but the spring & magazine body are slightly different; apparently the spring & body difference are sufficient because the Tripp magazines work with the same follower as the ones that did not work. In the replacement Tripp kit and magazines I bought for the Commander they have a "hybrid" follower, looks like the one in a Wilson magazine with metal added to the front (someone will hate that description). Yes, I agree, pistols (especially ones at or over the 1,000 mark) should work 100% with the magazine(s) they come with, but that has not been my experience.
No internal lock or magazine disconnect on my pistols!

What kind of company ships mags that don't work with a product? For the money that these names draw on the pricetag, this **** should work flawlessly. Man I would be pissed off if I dropped 1200$ on a colt or Kimber only to have a piece that is picky with mags.

These companies need to up the QC on the line....
