    Smith 642-2

I picked one up to add to my arsenel. The finish is a bit worn near the cylinder latch. Anybody know what it is?
Is it something that an owner can fix or is is gunsmith/factory refirb time?
It shoots well, and I want to recondition it if cost effective.
I got a good buy on it, but don't want to blow a lot of money to restore it.

If it's a carry piece or back up gun, why bother?

I bought an older 642 that has noticable wear on the "painted" aluminum finish, but the gun locks up tight and shoots great. It stays either in an IWB or ankle holster, so I don't care if it shows a little wear and tear.

They actually have a lacquer finish over the aluminum frame to protect it. Over time and use, that lacquer wears away and exposes the aluminum to the elements and it "tarnishes." As for a refirb, I can't help you there. Maybe refinishing it with Dura-coat would be a possibility?

Carry it!!! Shoot it. Don't worry about the finish. I like a revolver with carry wear. Gives them character.

Of my snubs above, anyone can buy a 442 that looks just like that one...but the model 49 with it's 50 years of carry wear is a one-of-a-kind. In the land of antiques, they call it "PATINA" and it is highly cherished.

I'm always nervous about using a new truck until it gets it's first scratch...and then I can use it like a truck. You're ready to use it like it was meant to be used.

OK. I'll leave it alone and just carry it.
It does lock up solid and shoots well. Took it to the range and was hitting COM on the first cylinder full, at 25'
It would appear that someone along it's ownership had installed a spring kit, and maybe did some trigger work. The trigger is very smooth.
It will be a carry gun. I got some 125 gr hydrashoks for it.
    Thanks for the advice.

My 642 looks like it's been through two wars, but still locks up tight and shoots straight. I put the Barami Hip Grip and Tyler T-Grip adapter on it when I first got it, and haven't changed a thing. Take it out and shoot it!
