I am pretty handy- built several project cars, motors, transmissions, rear ends, did some light body work.. etc.

It sounds like a fun project. I already found the IBOK guide - I need to order one.
Put the Dremel down, now! You can do more damage with a Dremel in 15 seconds than you can fix in weeks. Brownell's will have the stones you need. If you only got one, this one would do: You should be able to tell which surfaces work against each other when you strip the gun. If nothing else, dry fire it a bunch, then strip it. The surfaces that need slicking will show where they wear against one another. Use some good oil on the stone, and keep square flats and edges square. You don't need to take out all the machine marks, just smooth the surfaces. Be sure to wash off the stone residue with a good "blaster" spray before you reassemble, and then oil the parts lightly.

When I first got my SP101 I couldn't hit the broad side of a barn until I put the Hogue Monogrip on it. Great score all the way around!

If you do go the reduced power hammer spring route, I would get the shooters pack, and play around with what works best for you. I initially put a 9 lb one in, and was getting a few light strikes. I switched to the 10, and it has been smooth sailing since.

Oh, and by the way, congrats. I have one exactly like yours...but i put an xs sight on the front, and swapped out the grips with a pair of Pachmayr's. Great gun that will last a few lifetimes.

What a perfect gun ... you'll have to borrow it 'every now and then' ;)

There's a lot of very good +P .38 Special ammo that will work out very good for her. The .357 chambering gives you a lot of choice; hard to go wrong with that.
