In case of a "Mad Max World" scenario, I would definitely choose either a 12 gauge Mossberg 590A1 SPX 9 round shotgun or a Colt AR-15 rifle in .223 Remington. Nonetheless, it seems that the best choice would be a Glock pistol since it is very reliable, lightweight, mobile, there are plenty of spare parts, accessories and holsters available and it can take high capacity magazines which can come very handy in a World without order or law.

For the aforementioned scenario, it just depends on taste, caliber preference and ergonomics. I would choose an HK P30 or a Walther P99.

Since OPFOR pointed out this would not be a survival/ end time scenario, providing I could still buy reloading supplys and componets, I am left with no choice but to change my pick to a 4 inch 44spl in the N frame model.

Virtually indestructable if you do your part.

G19 is a good gun but I certainly would not want to hunt with it, well not anything large at least.
I would trust the 19 to be able to take up to deer size game with a 20 yard and under head shot. anything larger and I am getting my bow which is capable of killing any game on the planet.

not when my .30-06 was so more effective

Exactly - the OP didn't say we were relegated to one FIREARM. I would have rifles/shotguns for hunting/End of Days; the pistol is for what a pistol is for - self and home defense when a long arm is inappropriate...
A man fires a rifle for many years, and he goes to war. And afterward he turns the rifle in at the armory, and he believes he's finished with the rifle. But no matter what else he might do with his hands - love a woman, build a house, change his son's diaper - his hands remember the rifle.

Actually, a 22 rifle or pistol will do all that needs doing in competent hands. Options are nice though.

I agree with OPFOR, there was no stipulation that this is your only firearm, just only handgun. Hunting is best done with a long gun, no matter the desired target. Of course you CAN hunt with a handgun, but why limit yourself when you are still allowed long guns?

Why not? I do every year. And I fill the freezer every year. It's not really that big of a deal if ranges are 100 yards and under on deer size game. Of course, in more open areas a long gun would certainly be the only choice.
As far as small game, a light load and round nose bullet works well on small game, not destroying too much meat.

I think the choices made here probably depend on location of user, shooting experience and favorite firearm/caliber.

I agree, which is why I am still sticking with my G29. I can shoot .40, .357 sig, or 9X25 out of it as well by simply purchasing a barrel. I consider myself an expert trapper in my AO so I am not worried about small game.

AZ, the only reason I would not choose my 10mm is because I hate trying to reload auto cartridges.

Well, maybe not the front runner, but I like it - don't know that I could say it'd be my one and only, but it's not too shabby:
