There is something about firing 4,200 thirty millimeter rounds/min that makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside.
It never ceases to amaze me how much gets read into a simple post.
Did the OP ask for a SHTF gun? Did he say you could or could not have other guns? He just asked for what would be your all around, use for anything handgun if you could own just one. Like what would you consider the most versatile...
Didn't he?
For a hand-gun, that would definitely be a G23.
But I still want to keep a Browning 12 gauge, a Ruger 10/22, a Remington 270, and a Colt LE 6920.
Sometimes on a clear day, I can see into the future with this spotting scope.
I alredy have it, and it's my favorite. S & W 686 w/ 5" Barrel

QKShooter, I think there is a misunderstanding. I am not advocating using a 22 for the largest mammals. I am just stating that there is not many things beside these that can't be taken with a 22, and I was not talking a handgun, but a rifle, although I did not properly reference either in that post.
A well placed shot from a 22 rifle will easily kill a man, and many game animals. Many people underestimate the utility of that little round.
Glock 22 Gen 4, 27
Ruger SP101 .357mag
S&W 637 Airweight
Ruger Single Six
Ruger Blackhawk Bisley 45 Colt

Not to sound like a slave to fashion, but my Glock 19 would be my choce.
I don't hunt, and I wouldn't hunt with a handgun if I did. I don't "plink." I carry everywhere, every day. With this explanation, my answer is very simple: Glock 19.
one handgun it would be a glock 19.

Only choice for me would be one of my 1911's. If cost was concern my Springfield 1911 in 9mm. Otherwise 1911 in 45!
It's not a problem til they make it one!
My Glock 26! I know, I know. I shoulda said 19 but my 26 is just so sweet to me!
Glock 26 9mm, Ruger LCR .357mag

I'd go with the SP 101 3+" barrel. I just picked one up with a 2.25" barrel and it is a sweet little piece. It is such a versatile little gun. Easily carried. Built like a tank. Very accurate. Absolutely reliable. I like the 2.25 that I just got but if I would be limited to one gun I would take the 3". It just makes good sense.
It is extremely easy to reload for and the round can be a light 148 gr wadcutter for plinking or small game or a hot .357 125 grain hollow point for self defense or a hot 158 gr JSP for larger animals etc.
It is a good question. The closest that I get to this quesstion is when I travel and am limited to what I'm going to be taking with me. The 101 will generally be at the top of the list.

I think the OP only asked for a handgun for all-around general purposes. No specific mention of big game, taking on gangs armed with Uzis, etc. No end of the world scenerio. No one brand/model/caliber is going to be the absolute best in all catagories he suggested. He asked what gun you would choose, not what you think everyone else should choose! You want to pack a .22, pack it. If .44 mag is the only way to go for you, pack it.
I've gotten far more use in the catagories OP mentioned with a .22 than with all other handgun calibers combined, so that would be my choice for one gun only.
How about just stating your preference and drop the "What ifs" and snide remarks. It's starting to sound a bit like some other forums here.
