Finish on Smith & Wesson 642

    Hi,
I have looking hard at purchasing a Smith & Wesson 642 but just read a post on another forum where a number of people were complaining about the finish on the 642. They said it had some type of coating that started to wear off shortly after starting to carry the weapon.

Have any of you had that experience?

    Thanks

I've only owned a S&W 638 for a few months, but I haven't had any issues with wear so far. That being said, you're going to experience holster wear with virtually any firearm you own. There's not getting around that. It's easier to simply accept the fact that this will be a service weapon and not a show piece.

I had the coating on my 637 come off with the cleaning solution I had used on all my guns.
I did call S & W and they did give it a new finish for free...then I traded the gun (it still worked just fine).

My 642 has started to wear on the bottom of the grip and around the edges, it's not hoster wear it's just from handling the weapon and the lacquer is wearing off. Part of the problem is aggressive cleaning or soaking in cleaning solvents to long and that will take the lacquer off with a quickness.

I've never completely convinced my wife not to carry in her purse so the Model 642 occasionally sees duty inside that harsh environment, less now than in former times. Even after 12 years it still pretty much has a flawless surface finish. I've read of other Model 642s losing their outer finish coating but this hasn't yet occurred with this one.

Apparently Hoppe's No. 9 doesn't degrade the finish.

Thats good to know I wonder is there any time frame on getting the gun refinished ?

Had it happen to me on a 637, Not bad but the "clear coat" was definitely wearing quickly on the back strap from handling/shooting. I have a 642 that shows some minor signs of this but not as pronounced as it was with my 637. At the end of the day, they're gonna look used if you use them. The clear coat on the airweights will show wear long before other types of coatings. On the other hand I have a Rock Island Armory 1911 that showed holster wear within a few weeks on the parkarized finish. On a Kahr P9 with DLC coating....well I've had that gun a LONG time and carried and shot it a lot and the finish on that looks almost new.

I wouldn't worry about it for a working revolver like the 642 but do consider that getting that gun refinished with any other type of finish can be problematic because of the different metals (i.e., fame vs barrel). I checked into getting mine coated or refinished in a harder finish but the few I found that would do it wouldn't guarauntee the frame from cracking when removing the barrel.

So you can always send it back to S&W under warranty if it's really bad (less likely) or for a fee they'll refinish it like new if it gets worn over the years and you'd like to refinish it. This is why an all stainless revolver has an advantage. After years of use, you can have it bead blasted for relatively l;ow cost and it looks new again!

I have a 642 that I purchased when they were re-introduced, maybe 1990? It has been carried a quite a bit, but shot very little. I think I can see some wear, but I'm certain that a blued/dark anodized gun carried the same way would be much worse for wear. The stainless cylinder polishes right back up, as you can imagine.

Most people think a 642, 637, 638 etc is a stainless gun, it is actually a "silver" gun. Thats why I would tich with the black guns like the 442, etc.

I have the same problem as Gideon, the back strap on my 637 is worn and looks chipped, its also has some holster wear. The finish on these air weights and air lights with coatings just doesnt seem to hold up. I dont think there is any difference between the finish on then 637 or 642 so I am surprised one seems to wear faster than the other. I have not seen any 442s with the black finish and wonder how it will hold up over time. In any event it doesnt affect the operation of the gun, just a cosmetic issue.

If/when it happens it happens right away, after a few range sessions and carry times. It seems if you make it past 40-50 days you are good to go. Maybe a bad batch got turned loose?

I have the 442 (black annodized) and the finish has been problem free. I've read a number of issues with the 642 finish also.

My 642 is showing finish wear on the point of the gun's alloy frame that are pressed into the holster when pocket carrying. Essentially, the finish seems to have worn off a little, revealing the shiny aluminum alloy. It's not going to impair the functionality or cause any issues. It's not a safe queen--it's my every day, all the time carry gun. To me, that's just evidence of being loved...

I've had my 442 less than a year, and the finish already has VERY significant holster wear. More then my Keltec p3at after more than 2 and a half years of EDC. I'm a little disapointed by the finish to be honest....That said, if the worst problem it ever gives me is the finish wearing prematurely, thats more than A-OK with me! I'd rather have a reliable scratched up hideous snubbie, than a purdy weapon that KABOOMS or goes click.
