    customizing your 1911(or any pistol)

Has anyone out there sent their 1911 (or something else) to Wilson, King, Tussey, etc) for customizing? Was it worth it? I would like my 1911 de-horned, given snag free night sights, a good ambidextrous safety, and given a good trigger job.

I generally carry a 4" Springfield Champion or a 3" Kimber Ultra Tactical, but my 5" Springfield is a "sweet" piece and I would love to have that one customized.

Any comments one way or the other?

    My experience with customization

I have a number of 1911s that I use for range and carry purposes, and I have had several of them customized in various ways. But I have a local gunsmith that I trust so have not sent them off to a big name gunsmith for this. I have had such tasks as dehorning, beavertail installation, trigger work and refinishing done at various times. The guns are now more shootable and comfortable than they were originally, so I am glad I did the customization. I doubt if the value of the guns is much enhanced by this, but these are guns I hope to keep indefinitely so that doesn't matter to me.

Here is a 43 year old Colt Gold Cup that has been refinished and had a new hammer and beavertail installed, along with a magwell. It is one of my favorite 1911s for range use.

Any good local smith should be able to install a set of night sights, fit an ambi safety, and do a trigger job. There's not a lot that a bigger name would do that should be worth the extra expense and wait time IMO.

I have customized all of my 1911s, most of them I'm still working on.

Springfield's own Custom Shop does great work too, you might look into them.

The problem is finding that "Good Local Smith." Easier said than done in these parts.

There are some good smiths in your state. Exactly how close to you I don't know. Try doing a Google search.

Stick to the K.I.S.S. principle.....Good Trigger,Good Sights and resolve any reliability issues(feed and fire anything). I have had my Colt OM (which was a 1st yr.production) go to Wilson,Heinie, Dino of Siles in NYC and finally get a great recoil spring(ISMI) set-up from EGW. ALL QUALITY WORK. My Colt Gov't Series 70(circa 1984 model)went to the Gunsmity out at GunSite in 2005. Excellent work also. If your Springer is a new production gun you shouldn't need much done. My guns were from the "hardball era" so they required a little more tweaking. Good Luck

I customized my own, so I'll shamelessly post another picture of it again.
