You have probably named two of the finest snubs ever. I don't think you could lose with either choice, all the great points have been made. If it was for every day carry, likely the 640 would be best. But, for shooting and house duty the SP would likely be the winner. Either gun would be awesome. The lock on the Smith would be the final deal breaker if I were chosing one of the two. I actually own the SP 3" for house duty and woods bumming and elected to go with the 642 for pocket carry. It is quite a bit lighter than either and is a great carry weapon. Great options!

Wife likes Ruger, I like S&W

Straight up, I bought an Air Weight for my wife. She shot a friends Ruger SP-101. The Ruger is heavier, and less recoil for her. I have several S&W pistols in 38 plus P, and 357 Mags. Take this into account when picking weapons for females. Revolvers are great choices for those with reduced grip strength, and unable to rack a heavy slide. Weapon weight negates recoil. Take that into account.

    Welcome to the Forum, Mtelep!

I'd have to like the Smith & Wesson too.

I am a huge fan of the SP101. Without a doubt it is the most ruggedly made snubbie on the planet, and it will keep chuggin' away even with a heavy diet of hot loads.

Shoot a lot with heavy .357 = SP101. Knock around gun = SP101. Concealed carry = 640 (in my case I go with 642) that 640 pro is mighty nice if you wanted something in between...

I carry the SP most days, but the 642 does my pocket carry when I need a fast trip to the store or gas station. S&W Mod 60 does a nice job also smaller frame but still all steel so it soaks up a little more recoil. Just get good grips will help tons. Milt Sparks summer special is my holster of choice works great.image.jpg

Everyone has good points. My two cents: 649 (shrouded hammer, more shooting options) for pocket carry, SP-101 for most everything else.
