However, I've always wondered why some 1911's have these front serrations on the slide. In what way would they ever be useful? I just don't see it myself. Is there really a practical purpose for having them?

Or are they just decorative to make the gun look cool? Perhaps I am missing something. Front serrations look worthless to me.

Some like to use them for doing press checks, I was of the opinion that they were useless until I caught myself using them for press checks as intended during a class.

Some people like them some don't. I could take 'em or leave 'em.

Some people like them for doing a press-check of the chamber; I do not, and I also prefer the look of a 1911 without them.

I don't think I'd go so far as to call them worthless.

I use the front serrations to unload my 1911s. Since I am left handed, I operating the slide with my right hand. When emptying the chambered round, I use the front serrations & the round lands in my palm & doesn't go bouncing across the floor. (I just wish my Glocks had them.)
