Ruger LC9 vs S& W 642 for pocket carry
Hi,
I have been looking for a handgun suitable for pocket carry. Feel I need to stay with the 9MM. I have handled the S & W 642 and it seems like it would be good for pocket carry but I wonder how it compares to the new Ruger LC9. Some people seem to think the Ruger is too big for pocket carry but when comparing the dimensions the Ruger seems a little smaller overall. Have not yet been able to handle the Ruger so I am working at a disadvantage.
What do you think?

IMO, the Ruger will be far to large for pocket carry. Its just as much about the shape as it is the dimensions.

I agree that, for me, the LC9 is too big for pocket carry. Then again, so is the snubbie - I have big tree trunk thighs, and when I sit, the snubbie prints too much. I find the LCP about perfect, and used to pocket carry a PM9 as well.

I pocket carry a 642 everyday. But then again, I am 68 years old and I don't wear skin tight pants "to show the girls my bulges" anymore either.
I also find that most peoples' perception of "printing" is more phobic than real. Most people don't really care what you carrying in your pockets enough to notice. Those who do care what you are carrying are after your stuff and they need to know you are carrying so that they don't die stupid.

I have no problems pocket carrying my new LC9. I do wear baggier jeans (not gangsta sytle) and when I pick pants I go for ones with very large pockets to accomodate pistols and other stuff.
It really depends on your size and your pants, but yes, the LC9 can be pocket carried.

I apparently buy my pants at the big pocket store, because I have no problem whatsoever carrying a snubbie revolver or my Taurus PT709 in my pockets. I've even carried my XD40sc in my front pocket. It really depends on your size and the style of pants you wear. I wear pleated front khackis most of the time.

I gotta admit--the LC9 can indeed be pocket carried relatively easily. The wife bought the LC9 this past Sunday for her CC weapon.
Personally, I pocket carry the LCP (in a Nemesis holster) daily while waiting on my custom PPS holster. Anyway, I took one look at her new LC9 and thought there was no way that thing would ever fit in my pocket. So what did I do, I dropped it in my pocket to give it a try. Not only did it fit, it fit rather comfortably. I was pretty surprised. Yep, it's plenty bigger than the LCP. But, it's smooth shape, much like the LCP's, is very conducive to pocket-carry.
No experience here to share with pocket-carrying snubbies though. Sorry.

I have a S&W 638 and Kahr PM9 and don't find either of them comfortable for pocket carry. I don't like the way a revolver's cylinder feels against my thigh when I sit and the PM9 moves around a little too much since it's 20oz. loaded. I usually pocket carry a Kahr P380 or a Ruger LCP.

I haven't handled an LC9, yet. But I have pocket carried an LCP, and do carry a 442.
The snubby doesn't print any more than the LCP, for me, and it's far more reliable.
Another thing; the 442/642 series is a proven platform and the LC9 is relatively new. It might be wise to sit it out for a year and see what happens.

I find the LC9 to be quite easy and comfortable to pocket carry. I Live in Florida and wear shorts 10 out of 12 months, so for me, pocket carry is very convenient. I have only a few shorts with shallow pockets and those make IWB carry necessary.
I also have a S&W 642 that I pocket carry, and the 642 and LC9 feel about the same, but the snubbie breaks up the outline of its shape a tad better.

As I get older (now 68) I find myself wearing Haggar Comfort Fit Pleated khakis pretty much anytime I am not in Carpenter Jeans. Pockets are deep and sturdy as well as being the most comfortable pants around. Here in Tennessee I buy them at Kohls and Belks when they are on sale. They wear like iron and look good to boot. I even wear them for dress with a white shirt, tie and blue blazer. A 642 and pocket holster absolutely dissapears in the front pocket. I think that most will find that as they get older their style of dress changes and it gets easier to conceal pocket carry.
