When thinking about this question, are we looking at the most historical significance making it great or just the best design? I can look past the goofiness of tossing out the names of stuff that I happen to own and like, personal preferences set aside and look at the true value of the pistols.

For a combat gun, it has to go to the 1911. Of course there are tons of variations, we'll assume its a quality 1911. A close second and unsung hero is the P220. Glock deserves at least an honorable mention, they changed the course of handgun history with the G17 and G19.

Carry gun, again, looking at historical significance, I got to throw it to the snub. It's been a steady mainstream iron clad performer longer than anything out there and is starting to enjoy a reinassance period again. Better and more modern have come and gone, but the trusty snub nose has been warming pockets in cold dark streets for many generations.

Best combo of both? The G19 is the best handgun overall.

Combat: M-16 (sorry, i dont do combat with a handgun)

    Carry: 1911
The 1911 is an antiquated weapons system but then again, so am I.

Why would it not deserve a spot on this list? I've had it for over 12 years, 1000's of rounds, 0 failures to anything, 15 round mags, and it's the only full size handgun I own. I trust it as much as my G26. Only other handguns I own are PM9 and LCP.

Accuracy ALWAYS WINS! So carry what you can hit with.

If you find yourself in a fair fight your tactics stink.

The reason is that this thread is about the best handguns EVER. Your Ruger may be a great gun for you but as far as I know the Ruger P89 has never done anything to set itself apart. Nothing, not a thing.

Guns that would make my list as the best ever:

455 Webly revolver: It's was in service with the British from 1887 until 1963. It helped the British rule an empire and it also served honorably in both world wars. Before 1900 it was THE best combat pistol in the world.

The 1911: Served in two world wars plus a thousand other conflicts and has a reputation as being a true "man stopper". It is also widely regarded as having the best trigger EVER in a hand gun. It is still serving proudly today 100 years after it first took the field.

Browning HP: Has served military men around the globe for more than 60 years. Was the first "high capacity" gun that worked. It has been said that the BHP was JMB's best design (that's very high praise).

Sig P220: Introduced a new standard of reliability and changed what people think about combat handguns.

Glock 17 : It revolutionized the firearms industry. The G17 changed what people thought was possible in a handgun. It also redefined the weight/balance/capacity standard and has left others so far behind they have been trying to catch it for 25 years.

And what, my friend, has your P89 done to compare to these Résumés?
