Point taken. I change my input to read "I PREFER not to do combat with a handgun". I made an assumption (Yeah I know) that we could choose.

As has been stated before.... The one I have in my hand! (Own)

Many great guns have been listed but what's a good fit for me may not fit YOU!
The 1911, BHP, Glock, SIG, H&K, Ruger, etc........ Are for the most part very good guns.
For combat: The largest one you can carry in the largest caliber you can handle.
For carry: The same as above but what you can fit in your IWB holster

    Just my .02

Windicator? for real? That was my 1st snubby. Trigger had more crunch that a truckload of kettle cooked potato chips, weighed something like 2 lbs.
Can't fault the G18 fantasy. Who wouldn't like a select fire Glock with a satchel full of 30rd mags?

For me, make it a Glock 19, unless I can have a pistol AR in 7.62x39 mm
For carry, it's a toss up between the Glock 26 and the Ruger LCP. Firepower vs conceilability.

If I received the task of choosing to keep only one pistol, I would choose my Glock 26. It is easily concealable (for me at least), decent caliber that is also economical, its accuracy makes me look better than I am, if I want more rounds I can use g19, g17 or 33 rounders which makes it very versatile.

The BEST handgun Ever..? For me it's a tie:

    Glock 19
    S&W Centennial series.

Humm, I don't have an opinion on a combat gun, I guess high power, max capicity very reliable.
Having never been in combat luckily, I can't really offer an opinion.

For concealed carry I like my Glock 27, but my snub nose is more concealable.

I didn't read through all 7 pages of post but I hope someone has already said "The one your can shoot the most accurately!"

I have to agree on the Glock 19 though I haven't had one in many years the G19 is probably the best firearm they ever made for pure enjoyable and accurate shooting. I also think the G20 is one of the most underrated firearms ever made. It's like a semi-auto high capacity magnum firearm.

The best handgun ever though? It can't be just one. For me the best shooting semi-auto in the world is the H&K P7M8....The most beautiful made revolver ever made is the deep blue or nickel plated older series of Colt Python's. The sad thing is I've had both but kept neither. I traded the P7 for a complete home gym of over 400lbs of olympic free weights including a weight bench and a Remington 1187 Police shotgun and the Python was stolen.
I hope to one day reacquire both those fine pieces and a Kimber SIS" in the "custom" size.

1911's and revolvers works for me too.
