Taurus PT709 - Discouraged: Range report

So, my wife went to the range with her sister. Went through several rounds (not sure exact number, but it was less than 200) and had 2 FTE. Now, I've shot plenty of rounds through that gun and not one hiccup. Now, with this happening, I'm wondering if I need to trade this in for a reliable firearm. Yes, it was only 2, but what IF she was in the situation that she and my daughter depended on it.

I carry a Glock, she doesn't like the grip. Too big.

So, what is comparable that is proven to work. I'd even consider a .380. NO CALIBER WARS, please!

    Am I over reacting?

My wife carries a Bersa Thunder .380. She loves it!

I know there are 100% reliable Taurus products out there, but I just couldnt buy one for my wife. Have you thought about a LC9 or LCP?

I wouldn't get all panicky just yet.

    Whom did it fte on?
    Wife , her sis???
    Same magazine???
    Limp wristing her shots.???

You need to go with her next time and evaluate what is going on.

You shoot through all mags first, 2x, then you wife or her sis shoots.

Go about it in a systematic manor, then decide whats going on, and then you'll know what to do.

Yep Could be limp wristing, sometimes having them squeeze a rubber ball will build up hand and wrist muscles so it's not a problem

Sounds like more testing should be done, like OneShot said.... How many over all rounds have you put through it before hand?

could also be the ammo. whitebox winchester stuff has known to cause problems... especial on newer, unbroken in guns.

Ya, I think it was ammo error and a good oil was needed. We fired another 200 rounds without any issues. I have some white/green "mega"pack from Remington that we used. Fires just fine though my G26. Must have been a fluke.

HOWEVER...she did see the Bersa Thunder and we rented and fired 50 down range. She liked that so much more...ended up trading for that. Now have a .380 in the house. I'm actually very impressed with the Bersa...how it feels, shoots, etc...

    Thanks guys for the advice.

Bersa's a great. The Bersa Thunder 380 is a smooth and accurate shooter. I have the Bersa Thunder 9 Ultra Compact and I've been thoroughly impressed with it.

Glad she got a gun she really likes. With modern ammo now a days, the .380 can be a good defensive round. And if she likes the gun, she is more likely to carry it and to shoot it well.

    Congrats on the new Bersa.

Sounds like the issue of possible limp wristing has come up and I would certainly check to see if that is possibly going on.
There is no shortage of bad comments and press about the 709 but I have 2, both have been outstanding guns.
    Good luck.

    Forget the Semi-Auto...

FTFeed, FTExtract, FTEject, jam, double feed, limp wristing, etc., etc., etc. None of these problems affect the ancient wondergun--There is no more reliable defensive handgun than a .38 Special revolver.

Easy to conceal. Perfect for the person who does not practice innumerable practice drills clearing semi-auto malfunctions. Pull the trigger and it works--every time !!! Respectable power, same size hole as a 9mm.

Why are so many people fixated on carrying semi-autos with their numerous failure modes??? Newer ain't necessarily better--just another marketing tool. Gotta have the latest? Smarten up!!!
