For the money - an RIA compact tactical could be the way to go - great shooters and inexpensive compared to other 1911 platforms.

I have a Colt New Agent with Crimson Trace laser grips and I thought it was almost a perfect gun. I then put a "arched" main spring housing and a X grip adapter on a full size mag and got my favorite carry gun - 8+1 in a 23 oz. 1911.
I have the G36 and I have had no problems what so ever. Recoil is very manageable and it is alot easier to conceal than I thought.
At almost $500 cheaper than the Colt and Sig it would be the Glock 36 for me.
Glock 22 Gen 4, 27
Ruger SP101 .357mag
S&W 637 Airweight
Ruger Single Six
Ruger Blackhawk Bisley 45 Colt
Mossberg 835 Grand Slam
You know the saying... "been there, done that, got the tee shirt."
I love my 1911's, I truly do. But for everyday carry, I find myself grabbing the G-36. It's so sweet to carry and has never had a malfunction no matter how badly I abuse it.

ALWAYS carry! - NEVER tell!
"A superior Operator is best defined as someone who uses his superior
judgement to keep himself out of situations that would require a display of his
superior skills."
And for about $100 cheaper than the Glock 36 you can get the same firepower and a much thinner frame with the Kahr CW45.
That said, am I the only one who thinks the grip on the Glock 36 is horrible? I have several Glocks, but never could warm up to the way the 36 felt in the hand.
Even with the above said, I would still look at the HK45c first and the H&K USP45c as a not so distant second. Especially if you are a lefty like me.

Looks like all of my recomendations have already been mentioned. So check them out and see what you like best.
I own the Colt Defender and RIA Compact tactical. Both have been good pistols. The Colt being much lighter but more expensive. Have been temped to give the Glock or a Kahr a try as well. But just haven't gotten around to it yet.
I've been wanting to try the Kahr myself. Don't write off the Kimbers, I rotate between a USPc and a Compact Stainless, which I happen to think is the perfect carry gun(but I could be bias).
ETA: Here's a series 1 like mine( minus the work)

First a big +1 on the H&Ks. The .45c fits your hand great and is accurate and reliable. Recently I purchased a S&W 1911sc "E" series. Besides being the best 1911 out of the box I have bought the light weight and round butt make it easy to carry.

--When it first came out, I carried a Kahr Arms PM45 and I loved it. I carried it in a Blackhawk leather holster that had a spare magazine holder built into it. That package is very nice - it hits where you aim it, it's very reliable, it is easily concealed under minimal clothing (but not quite a pocket gun like PM9/40), and it did not bark as much as people think.
--Back in about '94, I carried the AMT DAO .45 and I loved it, except for the channel sights. The PM45 is like a very refined adaptation of the AMT, but a much better shooter, especially with decent sights on it
--Currently I am carrying a Glock 30/36 hybrid; THe Glock 30SF frame with a Glock 36 slide with Heinie sights. It's 10 rounds, fairly simple to conceal, ultimately reliable, and hits where I aim it. People think it's silly, but its 10 rounds of what I think is the best round out and it works for me. Besides, the 36 doesn't feel right in my hands, but I love Glock reliability.
Good luck and stay safe
