This is a discussion on Springfield EMP or Kimber Ultra Carry? within the Defensive Carry Guns forums, part of the Defensive Carry Discussions category; Thoughts?...
you gonna put a round in the pipe?
if so-- 9 is EMP, 45 is Kimber

Tough choice, but I'd lean heavily toward the EMP. It's designed from the ground up to feed and cycle the shorter 9 mm and .40 S&W cartridges, rather than being a cut-down large-frame .45. You give up the big bore of the .45, but these days modern ammo minimizes the differences between the 9, .40 and .45. On top of that, with a 3" barrel you give up a little less with the high-pressure 9mm and .40 rounds than with the .45.

I love the EMP.....Too bad I can't afford one right now. Or next year, or the year after, or the year after that, or...

My UC II works very well and I love shooting it.

Just bought a ultra carry 2 and i love it. very light and easy to conceal in a tommy theis holster, Also very ,very, accurate.
I no longer carry Kimbers since my 'love affair' with Glocks, but I still love the Kimber 'Ultra'...small tool that makes big holes, and accurately, too!

++1 for what gasmitty said! Made to shoot small better than chopped to small.

I'm a lefty so I appreciate the ambidextrous considerations they gave both of these firearms and I want something compact to conceal easily/comfortably. If I remember right, they are both thinner than my XDM 9mm Compact.
I recently traded for an EMP 9 ( have 100 rounds through it now) and in the process of breaking in a Colt New Agent 45. So far , I like both of them about the same- each has it's pluses and minuses.
SA and Kimber, both are good. 9mm and 45auto, both are good.

I own both and size-wise they are almost the same. The EMP is just a hair shorter lengthwise while the Ultra is slightly shorter in height. Noticeable difference in width with the Ultra thinner. EMP being a 9mm holds 2 more rounds then the Ultra, and loaded they both weigh right at 30oz.
Shooting them both is a pleasure although I admit I am better with the EMP. Recoil for both is easily handled, but the EMP is after all a 9mm at 30oz and a 1911...so no question the EMP is better for tighter groups.
Between the two I carry the EMP more because it's 2 more rounds and I'm more accurate with it. That being said, you have to give consideration to the fact the Ultra is after all a .45 with superior punch.
If I was you though, I'd go for the .40 cal EMP. Almost a perfect compromise between them two. The .40 holds 8 rounds in mag, the recoil is not bad at all, you get almost the punch of the .45, and it's exactly the same size as the 9mm EMP. Both Kimber ad Springfield are great companies, although I'll tip my hat towards Springfield as my personal favorite.

Some great info there, thank you very much.
Thought about the .40, and Cabela's actually had a couple of them available (1 new and 1 used). I guess my line of thinking is that I already have 2 9mm's, if I add another to the mix it would be .45 or it wouldn't be worth it.
I don't know, definitely some food for thought there.
You might also consider a Colt Defender. Available in both 9mm and 45... a great little 1911 carry gun. Like mine very much.
My g/f has the EMP. I don't have any experience with the Kimber. I can say from self-experience that the EMP is a great carry size and it is very accurate and the recoil is not bad at all.
Also, consider customer service as well.
