Pepper spray (or similar)
Cell phone (or similar)
Horn, whistle or other noisemaker
Additional "tools" beyond those listed above
None of the above
When you go out, what typical "survival" items do you bring along with you? The intent is to see what level of general preparedness we typically engage in, from having something to write with, to calling for help, to defending ourselves.
Note that this list is restricted to common, easily concealable items that any general citizen might carry. The list is not intended to cover the range of items a LEO or bodyguard might use in the line of duty.

Nuts. That would have been a good element to have on the list: one spare mag; two or more spare mags. As well as CCW/CHL license. Hm. Ah, well.Originally Posted by rocky
I put the gun & "spare mag" into the same category. I would never leave the house wearing any gun without at least one reload. The ccw permit is self evident. I also don't go anywhere without my wallet. Need the driver's license/registration, the health and insurance cards 24/7 too.Originally Posted by P95Carry
Here's an interesting question that just popped up in my mind: If I decide to wear my Beretta M92 9mm with Mec-Gar 17rd flush fitting mags and I carry a spare that's 35 rds ready to launch! But if I carry a 1911, the total capacity (with the reload) is only the equivalent of carrying ONE mag with the M92FS! When I get my BullDog 44sp, it'll be even less!
I think that the purpose of the reload is not so much volume for a gunfight because face it, the fight will be over 99% of the time in 6 shots or less. We carry the reload for that 1% and the real purpose of the reload is (in my mind) to signal that it's time to assess the situation from good cover...and either move to better cover or if that's not possible, remember that you are "X" number of rounds from THE BIG SLEEP.
As long as you're loaded and in a position of good cover time is on YOUR side for the cavalry to arrive. Remember this isn't military combat in Iraq. It's personal self defense in "Anywhere" USA!
If I'm in a position of cover that means I've already screwed up in not neutralizing the threat to start with! It also means I'm worrying where my shot(s) went if I missed and I'm praying there are no "bystanders" down! To that end, I'm going to be very careful to avoid any possible collateral damage from this point on! That means I don't take a shot unless I'm sure it's going to put a BG away.

And of course, weapon or magazine failures. I don't feel any less comfortable with 7+1 or 8+1 in my 1911, or 12+1 in my XD40; I just want to have another magazine alongside just in case Mr. Murphy comes along to look at the one already in the weapon.Originally Posted by ExSoldier
I don't do spare mags, but I will carry a BUG (figuring I won't have the time, presence of mind or manual dexterity to actually switch out mags if the SHTF).
I need to start carrying a light, though. Thanks to this board I am convinced of their worth.
Just a gun and a cell phone for me.
Gun, knife, cell phone, keys, lighter, wallet, and my watch. Thats what I carry every single day.
Well , I COULD have checked everything LOL ,
but I took it to mean what I always carry on my person.
