I carry a SA Micro-Compact and am very happy with it. Without seeing any pictures it is hard to make any suggestions as to mods but if it has the usual small sights I would replace them with low profile sights better suited for carry.

A good, honest Holster Worn finish never bothered me.

If you do want to do a "touch up" then Brownell's Oxpho Blue works just great.
Buy a small bottle - it always comes in handy.

You really should not have to do much of anything to your pistol in the way of modifications.

They are pretty good to go right for self-defense out of the box.

A checkered front strap is always a nice addition & while functional...it's not absolutely necessary.

Only thing I can think of is putting on night sights, your not always going to be in well lit areas and being able to pick up your front sight quickly is pretty important

I carry a 4.25" barreled 1911. I have no problems concealing it using a IWB holster at the 3:30-4:00 position. I also use an OWB holster at times, carried in the same position. Only suggested mod I'd make, without seeing the gun, is night sights. As dukalmighty said, in low light situation they're a big help.

A strip of rubberized grip tape works very well for this. It can be had from any hardware/building supply store.

Well I took it. It came with 2 Galco holsters, 3 Wilson mags, 2 powermags, and the originals. I'm really happy with it. I swapped him my old pheasant shotgun with a few boxes of shotshells. I think I came out like a champ.
