I have a late 70's model combat commander. I really like it. It has the best trigger of any stock 1911 I have fired. It's not my carry weapon, but it used to be. I could go back to it at any time. IMHO commanders are the best choice for 1911 carry.

    Series 70 and 80

With all the discussion of the 70 and 80 stuff, I thought I would mention the only problem I've ever seen with the trigger safeties. Just to clarify, this was on a Para instead of a Colt, but at a MS State IDPA match a couple of years ago, a competitor had a malfunction that ended his match. The spring or plunger in the firing pin block broke, and could not be feild repaired. I don't know how common this actually is, but it would be a nightmare in a self defense situation. I also know, most IPSC shooters disable this feature on their match guns, just because of this possibility.

I am looking at one dated 1981 without the firing pin safety, in 95% condition for $565.

How do you like carrying it?

    What magazines do you use?

Should I replace/improve any of the parts?

    Holster recomendations?

It is blued with black sights. It has the ring hole hammer and checkered wood grips with the Colt medalion.

Serial number starts with a80xxxxxxx (I have been told that this is one of the "transition" combat commanders that came just before the firing pin safety change (Series 80)).

Any pics of yours would be appreciated.

    ridge runner,
    sounds like a great deal...

Mine is not a Colt, it's a Wilson Combat Professional and I carry mine IWB in a Milt Sparks Versa Max 2.
