Range Report - Colt Combat Elite

After six months of practicing the fine art of procrastination, I finally took my Colt Combat Elite .45 ACP to the range for a light work-out of 50 rounds of Mag-Tech 230 grain FMJ, finished up with 8 rounds of W-W 165 grain Silvertips. Distance was 20 yards.

I admit to a degree of nervousness every time I dropped the hammer on a Mag-Tech round, remembering our late compadre Bob Ford's unpleasant experience with this ammo, but all 50 rounds went boom with no problems, no malfunctions. Ditto the Silvertips, no malfunctions.

Case ejection was consistently to the right rear. I was able to recover all my fired brass. The Colt's Series 80 trigger isn't the best, but it's workable and the rear sight adjustments are sloppy. Definitely an area for improvement. I'm using an 18.5 pound Wilson recoil spring in it.

I'll have to shoot this Colt a lot more before I consider it for a carry piece, so for now, it'll be my nightstand gun. It sure is a lot more pleasant to shoot than my LW Commander, tho.

The Colt's Series 80 trigger isn't the best
A good gunsmith will clean that right up for you at modest cost.

    Help!

    Moderators:

Could one of you fine gentlemen bail me out and re-size my image in this thread? I can't get it done, no matter what I try.

    Thanks.

    Chris,

Thanks for the reply. The image on my monitor measures 1288 by 966 pixels which is way too big.

No kidding? I would have never thought of that.

Put a bunch more rounds though it the series 80 stuff only adds maybe 5oz to the trigger pull after a good amount of shooting it'll get a lot better my series 80 got better in about 500 rounds

That is a great looking piece got anymore pics?

Beautiful Combat Elite. I got mine in 1988. I've got about 6-7000 rounds through it. Only thing it ever needed was a new slide stop last year. Had three fail to feeds the first time I shot it. Not one malfunction since. Great gun, enjoy yours. Regards 18DAI.

It looks like a Gold Cup

The picture of the Colt Combat Elite looked very much like a Colt Series 80 Gold Cup, with the adjustable sights on top. The trigger is different than the Gold Cup, however. Is there any fundamental difference between the two?

As far as fundamental difference between the two, I don't know. I've never owned a Gold Cup. The Gold Cup has a different rear sight than the Combat Elite, and as you noted, the Gold Cup has a different trigger. The Gold Cup might have a lightened slide, I'm not sure. Forum member OD could address this question better than I can.

The Combat Elite was discontinued sometime in the 90s.
