Is Speer Gold Dot Short Barrel .38 +P the "best" choice for a 637/642 and, if so, where's a good place to order it? "Better" than Hydra-Shoks? Thanks.

One hurts as much as the other, I wouldn't want to take a hit from either. IMO their wouldn't be enough of a difference in them to tell you ther truth. Gold Dot .38 +P is as good as any.
I tried to find the website of a guy that test's just about any and all ammo. Maybe someone else has the link?

Thanks. I'd rather get the Hydra Shoks if they're really just as good since I have a good connection for buying them in bulk.Originally Posted by Ti Carry
I prefer the gold dots, they have a true bonded core and they are designed for short barreled guns. Hydra shoks and golden sabres do shed the jacket more than GD's. If they produce similar muzzle energy that would be enough for me to choose them.

Hello. While not scientific, here are some observations on the Speer Gold Dot 135-gr. +P "Short Bbl" load and a comparison of it with Remington's 158-gr. LSWCHP +P and Corbon's 110-gr. DPX +P:

Best.
Here is a good review article in the Gun Zone on this Speer ammo in .38 caliber:
Speer Gold Dot 135 grain .38 +P ammo review
The article says this ammo will exit the muzzle of a 2 inch snubby at 866 ft/sec, with energy of 225 ft-lbs. The numbers looked good to me, so I load my S&W 642 and Colt Detective Special with it. The powder burns fast so you don't get a lot of muzzle flash.
I carry it in my M37. It's accurate and the flash is almost non-existent (I shot it in a dimly lit range). I've done some testing with golddots as component bullets in other calibers and have been happy with their performance.
