    642 finish flaking off

My 642's finish is flaking off. I contacted S&W, they will take care of. I asked about getting the black 442 finish and he said to send a letter along with gun. He also said they would just refinish the frame only. I'm still thinking of doing it. I think the black finish would be more durable. The barrel and cylinder would be natual stainless. How are your 442's finish holding up. Your thoughts.

    I don't have a 442, but my 642 finish is very good.
I keep the solvents off it, using CLP mostly.

mine looks brand new. oh, wait. it is brand new. ;)
well not brand new brand new but brand new in that is has not been carried much. and if we are talking about a daily carry you have been carrying for a while now, what are we really talking about? aren't daily carry's supposed to get some wear and tear on them?

Is SW paying the shipping or do you have to pay?

I carry this gun 50% of the time iwb. The other 50% I carry 940 iwb. I carry 95% of the time. S&W is paying the shipping. I'm thinking that the black finish will be less visible when back pocket carrying.

I have a 637 S&W and I have used break free clp the whole time I have had it with no problems. Besides, a scratch here and there on a carry gun gives it character. At least I think so..

I hope we can see pics of the two-tone when you get it back.. I know carry pieces are not for looking at, but something tells me it will be pretty sharp.

If you ask them for a call tag, they will send you one. It usually takes a few weeks to get if you decide to go this way. Each time I've shipped back to S&W, they paid the freight both ways.

Do solvents hurt the finish of the 642? By that I mean stuff like Hoppes used on the bore.

Jimmy, like I said above, Man, I would use Breakfree Clp. I have not had the finish issues you are suffering from. Good Luck..

BlueLion...read posts above, I'm not having any problems, just wondering if I'm exposing myself to risk of developing problems.

A few years ago, there were alot of 642's coming out of S&W that had the problem you are talking about. It was eventually fixed, but not until a surprisingly large number with the problem had been released. IIRC, these pistols were sold by S&W at a discount and were snapped up like hotcakes. This discount and subsequent sales boom is a large part of why you see so many more 642's on the market than 442s.

I have a 442 which gets carried daily and is doing fine. The black coating is scratchable if you work at it, but I haven't had any problems with flaking or anything.

    All the best,

    Joe
