i really want ONE OF THESE, but i ride and camp in grizzly country.

since your main concern is cougar/black bear, i have/enjoy/trust/recommend the above pictured 686 in .357 magnum which is a very common black bear defense round. since most cougars up here are shot with .22 magnum, the .357 is definately plenty.

......if you didnt specifically say you wanted a wheelgun, i would recommend the glock 20. it gives you 16 rounds of 10mm.

Here's what I carried in my back packing days.
A stainless 1984 Smith and Wesson 686 combat model 357 magnum with 6'' barrel.
I bout this gun brand new in 1984 and even tuck it to Panama and stomped around the jungle with it for three years.
It's a true shooter and I love it.
Little heaver then the 4" but I had no problem carrying it.

My choice would be the Ruger GP100, in a 4 inch Stainless.

This is a great gun, the combination of wood and rubber grips gives a great feel and very accurate from my experience. You can either buy, or build great loads for the .357 that will handle the predators you have described.
Just remember that shot placement is much more important with what you carry than how big a bang you get with each trigger pull.

Yeah I have backpacked with a rifle. I can understand the weight issue, but I guess I'm just paranoid. hahaha I don't mind a deep-woods day hike with a handgun, but I'm not one to stay out for 3 or 4 days without something larger. OH well... haha

BTW, I like that survival kit! "We call this gun 'The Fecalator.'" $1400 sounds acceptable!!!
