Actually, for all-around use, a 4" or 5" barrel would be indicated. (I have those, too.)
To be clear, I would still need a SIG P229 for my duty holster, due to PD rules, but I consider a police duty pistol to be a different role than "all-around use," and, the original post's scenario did not specify that the all-around handgun had to be one's ONLY handgun.
Edited to add: Yes, I just re-read the original post. One all-around pistol. The language did not exclude other handguns for specialized purposes. My above reply stays the same, of course.
For one all around gun for SD, HD and hunting SP101 4" 357.
If I could only have one handgun I would go with a stainless .357 magnum revolver with a 4 or 6 inch barrel. Probably a S&W 686. With different loads it would easily cover anything I'd be likely to meet in the lower 48.
If you talking about carry guns, I'd go with a compact Glock.
Springfield XD 45 service model...13 rounds of 45 plus 1 in the throat, pretty hard to beat....

Gp-100. That tank will kill something if I hit em with it! And you can NOT argue with a .357 magnum!
