Jeb, For what it's worth I started looking at another 1911 model .45 ACP and was set on a DA/SA. I narrowed it down to Sig Sauer, Kimber and Para Ordnance. After a week and a half and putting together a little extra cash I pulled the trigger on the Sig Sauer P220 Carry Elite .45 ACP. It was $1,000.00, a bit more than I wanted to spend but it shoots like a dream and fits perfectly with my Crossbreed Holster. You can run 9 in the pistol if you want to; 8 in the mag and 1 in the chamber. It has a 3.9" barrel and it will shoot excellent groups at 25 yards. A bit expensive................. but well worth it. Hope this helped.
Whichever 1911 you decide on, be aware that you will lust after another, and another.... My problem is that the next one is always at a higher price point. This addiction runs deep.
If you have your eye set on one that is just above your limit, save a little while longer and get the one you really want.
Also, read and learn about the 1911. It's truly a fascinating design and a joy to detail strip and inspect. Don't let it intimidate you. There is a TON of information online about these pistols. Do your due diligence on warranties, customer service and customer reviews. One major company offers a one year warranty while others offer lifetime warranties. For some this is a major factor.
I started 1911s with a budget identical to yours. I won't say where it is now.
id get a Colt for the money
Kimber, without a doubt. I have been super impressed with mine. I have the Pro Elite. It is a 4" 1911 and i can carry it without a problem. You can also find some good deals on used Kimbers.
I have several 1911's that is my EDC, right now I think the best deal going is the Ruger SR1911. I love mine sweet shooter and you can pick one up for between $625 and $700, if you can find one. I am luvn mine.

I love Ruger handguns. According to a previous comment, Ruger will be coming out with a smaller verision. I would love to find out more information on when it will be released. Any one know?
I dont think there has been anything from Ruger suggesting a compact SR1911, its mostly been rumor. I saw this over at the Ruger forum:
