If your definition of combat does not include concealed carry, my choice would be an 18" barrel, tactical pump shottie loaded with 8 rnds of 00 buck and my pockets full of extra shells and a Kel-Tec PLR-16 with a laser sight on its rail, a tactical light and as many 30 rnd. mags as I could carry, and lastly a FNH 5.7.

What a great question! I carried a 1911 in Viet Nam in '71 and I still carry a 1911 in 5", 4" and 3" configurations (mostly a 4" model). I guess those models would be my first three. Add a Beretta 92 and either my Mustang .380 or a good snub nosed revolver and you have a good list to go to. Enjoy all the answers you get. They will all be interesting.

I am really impressed with the number of 5.7 x 28 so far, I guess I am not the only one who appreciates the virtues of that FNH gun and caliber.

Surprised but glad to see the S&W Model 19 listed by several of you. I've had one for years, first pistol I ever bought.

Your list strikes me as functional. But I have to ask, why does Walther make a designated barbeque gun?

    Archie,

I was just kidding, I love all of those firearms you mention. I have quoted many times that there are no better shooters then a 1911, or a revolver with a smooth trigger. I have also been quoted as saying life is too short to buy Ruger! I love Colt and S&W revolvers.

Getting to a Walther BBQ gun, I wouldn't mind taking this one to a BBQ.

In Combat I'd want a rifle.

For personal defense in a time of conflict my list of handuns, and the reason for their choice is...

Colt 1911 .45 acp. Much bang for the buck. Ammo reasonably affordable, and available. 100 years of proven reliability. No shortage of spare parts.

Browning High Power 9MM. Again Ammo is plentifull, and reasonably priced. No shortage of spare parts. Also a proven history of reliability.

S&W Model 19 revolver .357mag 4" bbl. A versitile caliber with the power to stop most threats be it man or beast. Able to shoot .38 sp also. Both .357, and .38 ammo is plentifull, and reasonably priced. The model 19 also has a long track record of reliability.

S&W Model 18 revolver .22 cal. Another gun with a proven track record. Caliber is capable of keeping meat in the lardor, as well as self defense in a pinch. Ammo is readily available and is inexpensive. Ammo is small and be carried in greater quantities. .22 ammo is probably the most popular of all, and would make good for bartering. This gun can easily be used to train others to shoot if need be.

S&W Model 36 revolver .38 Cal 2" bbl. While not the most practical gun for trying times, it would serve perfectly as a hide-out or back-up to any of the more situation realistic handguns.

Well thats my five and the logic behind my choices. These are also handguns that I already own, and have a quantity of ammo for, not a wish list.

Not to down play this but...
The one I am comfortable with, shoot welll and does the job when I have the unfortunate need of it.
Any caliber when shot well can and has proven to stop a threat.
