please define 'combat' so we are on the same page.

to me it congers a military, open carry style and as such
a pair of full size 1911's is all id want.

in a SHTF city or suburban setting it may be that our thinking is in combat mode
but we might find it better to carry concealed. so perhaps a shorter 1911 ( Defender?) Sig P239/40 or 357

Combat (as in save me & mine) with an emphasis on "appendix" IWB CC

    -Glock 27 (40 S&W)
    -Glock 29SF (10mm = maximum portable power)
    -Springfield EMP 40

My 1st 3 choices ^ are either appendix IWB or Smartcarry and are most likely to be carried.

    If utilizing strong side IWB:
-Dan Wesson Valor: full size 45 acp
    -Glock 23 (40 S&W)
No internal lock or magazine disconnect on my pistols!

This is a highly subjective question, and probably needs to be refined to get any sort of degree of accuracy out of the answers. A lot of people will list what they have and that is always not really what is best based on history or any scientific method of proving.

When ever this question comes up, I always answer with history and what guns made the most impact on in the gun world over their time. It doesnt matter what I have or don't have. Most of my guns have 0 significance in the grand scheme, but I like 'em.

So, with that in mind, here is my answer.

    1. 1911
    2. Glock 17
    3. BHP
    4. Sig P series
    5. Beretta 92 or HK P7

    I only have 3 I'd go with:

    1. 1911
    2. CZ75
    3. BHP

HK USP 9mm - my favorite "combat" gun, quality and engineering is hard to beat IMO.
M&P 9mm Compact - only slightly shorter barrel, but concealable if needed, and can use fullsized magazines for full-sized grip
Glock 19 (more concealable than the 17)
    FNS 9mm
    Pistol AR-15

If going to war and I had a choice of pistol, it would be an HK, either the HK MK23 or the newer MK24 (HK45), or even the venerable USP. After those three I'm not sure... maybe a Glock or Beretta.

    I could be talked into a HK P46, if I also had a MP7.

For concealed carry, where defense of self and family is the "combat" in decreasing order of desirability:

    Glock 19
    Glock 26
    P238
    LCP

After I've seen and fired one, I might stick the new SIG P938 in between the G26 and the P238.

    Top Five?

As mentioned, the problematic word is 'combat'. I'm far too old and fat to go adventuring off in hostile lands - other than possibly Washington, D. C. to see the Smithsonian and several other historic sites - in 'combat'.

So I will assume the 'combat' involved is the personal conflict between a rather ordinary man and the forces of chaos and evil rampant in our society.

    1. Heckler and Koch USP40c. After a long time of study, this is the pistol that fits my hand best, is easiest to conceal and yet delivers a forceful and accurate blow when needed.

    2. Smith & Wesson model 19 - 2.5 in barrel version; the old type with the pinned barrel. Alternately, the four inch version works well, as does the model 13; the same revolver with fixed sights. It fits me well also, hides well and still delivers the forceful and accurate blow.

    3. Colt (Lightweight) Commander in .45 ACP. Alternately, the Colt Government Model in .45 ACP. What is commonly referred to in the military designation of "1911".

    4. Several of the Smith & Wesson "N" frame revolvers, preferably with fixed sights, although I have been known to carry a four inch M29. Included are the "1917" .45 ACP/AR revolver and the various .44 Special revolvers made over the years. Again, the old type with pinned barrels.

    5. When I'm in a whimsical mood, the S&W model 39. It's the smallest caliber gun I carry seriously, but it handles so well and quickly. Not to mention it has more class than a lot of others.
