About your very first carry gun

P95Carry's ongoing Primary carry gun poll and a recent posting by MR D regarding the practice of reloading technique on the CCW and Tactical Training segment made me wonder: How many people started with a revolver and switched to an automatic, as I did, or vice-versa; were there any issues/challenges associated with the change, and did anyone switch back to their original method and if so, why?

I started out with a revolver, and currently, I have three of them in my CCW arsenal. I also have two semi-auto's that I currently use too.
I rotate them when it seems appropriate.

I used to carry and favor a revo. It was a reliability issue. Since then I've switched to all auto's. They have become reliable (even many smaller ones) It used to be that not many shots were fired in self defense situations, now it seems there are more multiple perp, drugged up situations and they have auto's. I like the slimness of auto's and the higher capacity and faster reloads.

First was a S&W model 28 that was issued to me. It was a good gun, but I never wanted another one after I left the force. From then on it has been primarilly autos. From time to time I have carried; 1911's (of several makes), Glocks, H&Ks, a Beretta, a CZ RAMI, and a Kel-Tec P11. My favorite is the one I carry most of the time now, the SIG P229. It is the best balance of power, reliability, and comfort for me, my deep cover gun is a P239 in the same caliber (.357SIG). I am however looking to buy a S&W 642 as a BUG.

I started with wheelguns, including a couple of single-actions. I can't truthfully say I ever consciously made a decision to step away from them to autos. I saw some bottom-feeders that looked like they might be fun to shoot, bought them, broke them in and started carrying them.

Yes I too started with a snub - first a M85 and then to SP-101.

It was not lack of familiarity with semi's as I had a coupla decades of shooting experience behind me. I guess it was more that I had ''teethed'' on revo's initially and know them well to shoot - plus the small size of a snubby.

Over time tho I went back into semi's more and found initially that my P95 did good duty but went from there thru transitions, including BHP - until I settled on SIG - which is where I am now this last 1 3/4 years.

I just started to carry and I have my SW638 and SIG229 on my permit. Time will tell which I prefer but so far it is the 638. So far I like pocket carrying the 638.

Started with a .357 revolver. I liked the "old school" look and feel, and I figured that 6 rounds of .357 should settle any problem I was likely to encounter... which is true... BUT...

I started reading about Sig, (started with Chris/ P95 here actually, may the Dark One eat his soul ). I read up on them, started thinking about unlikely but possible engagements I might face... and then found a good 226 in a pawnshop for fairly cheap.

After I owned it a while I realized it wasn't much heavier than my steel revolver, it was more comfortable to carry, and I shot it REALLY well. I also had a hard time finding a comfortable holster for an older revolver.

Now the Speed Six guards the safe, and the 226 rides shotgun on my hip... well actually I usually use a shoulder holster, so I guess it rides shotgun in my armpit.

Love wheel gun's, but not for carry. My first carry and still carry is a 1911. No other way for me IMO. Although, I am not stuck on a 1911for carry but I am on a semi-auto for carry. I doubt I will ever drop from a 1911 platform but stranger things have happend!

I started with revolvers but then discovered Glocks and Kel-Tecs. I liked the 1911, but it seemed to be a problem for concealment. Now I am comfortable with semi-autos. But there are still times I carry my old Tarus M85.

Yup, started with a "snubbie", a S&W Model 60. Unfortunately it was lost many years ago when my house was robbed. Now it would be a SIG P239 (if I weren't in Maryland).

Nope, just auos here. My first was a Glock 36, and I use it when I pocket carry, and either a Glock 19 or a XD 45 in holsters.

I started with a semi-auto; in my case a Browning HP Mark II in 9mm....still own it too.

I've gone to revolvers over time though.

I thought a Blackhawk or a Highway patrolman were too big to conceal so I just used a semi-auto.
