Neighbors shocked after 4 teens shot at Clearfield party
The kid was shot in the throat by a .22. The only damage was the entrance hole. The kid actually swallowed the bullet and doctors retrieved it from his stomach. Minor surgery and he was on the road to recovery, thank God.

It that would have been a NAA black widow it would have been different. That bullet would have gone clear through and possibly did some spinal cord damage

At those times that I carry a .22 I keep it loaded with CCI Velocitors.

The 22 LR HV is an high pressure, very efficient cartridge, when it doesn't fail to fire due to an uneven distribution of the priming mixture about the rim.

No cartridge is perfect and I don't want to get shot with any of them!
A 22 in the right spot will do the job.
Heck, there's a thread running about a guy who died from a pellet gun!
I don't carry a gun to look for or start a fight. I carry one to finish a fight I never wanted to be in.

I keep mine loaded with CCI Stingers (P22), I have no doubt it could stop a threat if need be.
Disclaimer:
My opinion shouldn't be taken seriously due to the fact that I've been shooting guns for over 30 years and have only recently been active on gun forums, where all the real world knowledge apparently is.

I don't remember who said it in one of their books, but Jeff Cooper or Elmer Keith said the .22 Long Rifle had taken every game animal on the North American continant including grizzly bear. With proper shot placement I don't doubt this in the least.
If you find yourself in a fair fight, your tactics suck.

That story means exactly jack squat. If you want I'll find the link of the SWAT guy who shot a perp square in the forehad with a 9mm out of a sub-gun (mp5) and all it did was leave a big ole' bruise on his head. If we went by one story of a gun failing to do its job we'd all be forced to carry around Howitzers.

Recent shooting. Kid fired 10 shots from 22 caliber pistol. 3 students are dead. Very sad.
Are there better cartidges than the 22 LR for defense/killing people? Yes.
Is the 22 LR cartridge lethal? Yes.

Some tests here:
GoldenLoki.com
You all can do what you want, but note that NONE of the loads tested meet the FBI minimum of 12 inches penetration when fired out of a handgun.
Unless you have some medical condition that prevents you from using a .380/.38 (minimum) I just do not see why you would use a .22 handgun for defense, especially with the increased risk of a dud with rimfire ammo.

Yes, but you failed to mention that the victim was Iron Forehead Maginte.

A 22 is a great cartridge - but too many duds. You carry an auto and get a dud, then you are screwed.
