    What he said.

My Sig Ultra (3.3" officer size) 1911 is awesome too. Easy to carry and conceal. No problems and shoots great.

I originally set out to buy a ruger, but them not being available and people jacking up the price on the ones that are available.

the R1 is a fine piece too.

watch, wait and be ready to jump. With a grand to spend you can get a nice Commander LW pre 80 series. I watched two guys pass up a 1955 CommanderLW up at a gunshow because it had slight wear, and according to them, it looked kinda old. I asked the seller to see it, picked it up, racked the slide, checked the perfect barrel, and felt what I later found out was a custom trigger job. I gave the gentleman 700.00 and smiled all the way home. I'm sure glad my Commander looked old, or else it wouldn't be home with me now.
Never be afraid to buy quality if it's used. Just never buy abused.

A Colt would do nicely. You'd have no regrets about acquiring the original.
