The .38 Short Colt, .38 Long Colt, .38 S&W, .38 Special, .38 ACP, .380 ACP, .38 Super, .357 Mag, .357 Sig, 9x19mm, 9mm Largo, 9mm Makarov, and the .36 Cap and Ball (and probably a bunch of others I'm forgetting) are ALL essentially the same "caliber" (+/- .006"), but in context are considered different "calibers".
If someone asks what caliber a .38 Special snub is, it'd be pretty rare (and misleading) to get the answer, ".357". Likewise, asked about his 9mm or .380, it's unlikely a guy would say, ".355". In the vernacular, a .40 S&W and a 10mm are different calibers.
Get past the semantics, my friend.
