Would this be for CCW or for plinking fun? If it's just for range duty, there are a slew of choices at sub $500 (Armsco, Rock Island Armory, etc.). If it is for CCW I would look at Ruger, S&W and Remington in the upper end of your price range.

Considering the price range your giving, I'd go with the Springfield Armory Mil-Spec.

$730ish gets you a Kimber Pro Carry 2 (4" version) or Custom 2 (full size version). I just bought my Pro Carry 2 a few weeks ago and it has been amazing. I have never owned a more accurate 1911. My other 2 1911's are American Classic Commander and Para GI LTC.

On the lower side of your budget you can't do much better than Rock Island IMO. Lots of models to choose from all under $650, even a few under $400. What you want to decide is what features you want.
Do you want mil spec sights or Novak style?
Do you like the small slide serrations or the larger, more modern ones?
Do you like beavertail grip safeties or GI style?
    Skeltonized hammer or spur type?
    Front strap checkering or not?

The thing I have learned is it is far easier to buy what you want with regard to the above (and more) than buy one without them and try and add them to it. Seriously, I learned the hard way. My kimber had everything I wanted and is high quality. The others I have are more troublesome and temperamental, probably because I "messed" with them.

Kimbers are the guns you show your friends....Glocks are the ones you show your enemies.

I would say Kimber also. If you buy Kimber you can also get .22lr conversion and shoot 22s with the same gun

That can be done with pretty much every 1911 of standardish configuration

Perhaps this may help Buyer's guide for all you 1911 addicts...

Let us know what you decide.

I purchased my first 1911 late last month. Spent just over $1,000 for a Colt LWT Commander. Great gun.

I don't think you could go wrong with a Rock Island. Good price and great customer service if you need it.
