You will have 30 pages of responses within a day so hang on tight. This topic is one of the more hotly contested ones around here. Some believe only a Colt qualifies as a 1911, others swear by Rock Islands. You have to decide what you want first, then go find the gun that can deliver.

I have had a Para GI LTC, American Classic Commander, and my current carry, the Kimber Pro Carry 2. The Kimber is the only one without a failure out of the box. The AC was a jam factory, the Para has had 2 FTF's in 300 rounds or so. The Kimber has eaten 350 or so rounds with no issue at all.

Hard to go wrong with a Colt though.

COLT; everything else is just a copy.

for my first 1911 i went with the rock island tactical. pretty cheap but great bang for the buck! i figured i'll learn the ins and outs of a 1911 then move up. now i'm seeing a STI in the near future!

What do you want to do with the gun; compete, carry, range gun, duty, etc.?

My current 1911 is a Colt Combat Elite and I think Colt is making some fine firearms right now.

The Colt gold cup is an excellent choice. I have had a Colt commander, a Springfield Armory V10 and 2 Kimbers. I liked them all.

Many varibles to decide on. In a low price range gun, I'd recommend RAI. Mid-range Colt, SA and DW. Upper range Ed Brown, Nighthawk.

There are many good 1911's and obviously Colt has a long name with them. Finances are probably your biggest decision. How much do you want to spend? Once you arrive at that everything else will be narrowed down. I only have one 1911, a Springfield Loaded Parkarized and it shoots extremely well. However, if I was in the same position today I would have spent less and purchased a Ruger SR 1911. That is me. You need to do what makes you happy and not second guess.

Depends largely on what you're going to use it for, and your price point. When it comes to 1911's you get what you pay for.

I am going to shoot it for fun and carry it some. My lgs has the gold cup for $1050. I think that is a good price for a new colt 1911.

So many people think it takes Big Bucks to get a good 1911,That isn`t true. I have three Rock Island 1911`s that I`ll put against any other gun. Never a problem, accurate and reliable. AND..Under $500.00 each. Works for me!.

I have a Gold Cup Trophy and it is a fine carry gun. It is more accurate than I.

Colt..... Why buy the rest, when the best is available. Every copy is always described as "Hey, it's as good as a Colt." Why have 'as good as' when you can get the best.
Colt Commander LW. I think shooting twice is just plain silly.

My buddies stock range officer is the best trigger I have ever felt. Probably the best quality for the price 1911 out there...other than rock islands.
