I wish I still had the article, but about 10 years ago I read an article that compared the .44 Mag with the .41 Mag. The conclusion was that the .41 Mag was a better choice than the .44!

Folks think that the .44 actually measures .44 in bore, but is considerably less (I don't know the precise number). The .41 gets a lesser grain bullet cooking at a higher speed and the ballistics come out like a .44 without all the recoil.

I wish I hadn't sold my S&W 629 Classic, for I loved it. One of those mistakes you make sometimes. Anyway, I never found the .44 Mag recoil to be too bad. But, the new lightweight ones, especially that 329PD weighing just 26 ounces, must kick like the proverbial mule.

Don't forget the Ruger BlackHawk in .45 Colt . These revolvers are usually less expensive than others, and with loads from Cor-Bon or Buffalo-Bore they can really lay the smack down on critters moving around on 2 or 4 legs.

What about an S&W 642. Loaded with some .38 wadcutters, should be good to go against bears............

Just kidding. I'd go with the .44 and call it a day.

I agree with the 41 mag being the best to carry. I personally prefer the Ruger Redhawk. You can get faster follow up shots than with a 44 and more knock down than 357.

    My .02

I'd recomend an S&W model 610. The 4" version loaded with full house 10MM will be real close to the performance of the .41 mag, and since it's a moon clip gun you can load it with .40 if you're only worried about 2 legged critters. The only downside I can think of is that since it was discontinued the price has risen considerably. Just bear in mind, I shoot moon clip guns in competition and love them. Some people don't.(I don't know why.)
This is just my opinion. This and a dollar might get you a cup of coffe.

A 4 inch S&W Model 657 .41 mag loaded with winchester 240 gr. Supreme Platinum Tip Hollow Points would be my choice.

I bought one 21 years ago and still have it, it is a great gun. Easy gun to carry in a N frame belt holster.

You can find one for less than $600.
