lots of choices for you, although it would narrow things down if you'd specified a caliber or two, as well as said if a polymer frame, striker-fired gun was what you desired.

    SigSauer P-220, P-226, P-229, P-239. Glock 17, 19, 22, 23, 31, 32, 37, 38. S&W M&P models. some of the FN guns. many H&K guns. many Ruger models. Steyr semi-autos. most Berettas.

my standard recommendation is that you borrow or rent as many different guns as you can, and shoot them. this will let you know which guns appeal to you and which ones don't.

If your looking at the xdm series they have a 3.8 in barrel with a full size grip as well as a 3.8 in barrel with the compct grip. And the standard xdm with full size grip and 4.5in barrel. Xds and xdms are great guns imho.

(listen to what sensei2 said about rentals)

    My additional 2bits...

If you're looking for a composite pistol:
Glock full-size pistols in the "smaller" calibers - 17/22/31/37 - have <4.5" bbls, I think.
    Sig P250C isn't quite a full-size grip, and the P250F is a bit over 4.5" bbl, but you could take a P250C, buy a $40 full-size grip, and dremel off the end - instant "Commander-style" P250 - full-size grip with a 3.9" bbl!

(from About the mag extensions - don't much like them - General P250 Talk - P250SIG.COM)

Or, if you've got the money... a P220.

You will be hard pressed to find a better match than the Glock 19
    C hawk Glock likes this.

Taurus 24 7 G2... important to make sure it's the G2 though. Make it in compact as well.

I carry an XD 9 service model. 4" barrel full size grip (16+1) IWB. No issues and love the gun

M&P compact or Glock 26/27 would be closest to the XDm compact I think. But why not just go with the XDm? It's an outstanding handgun.

I have chosen the XD because it fits my hand better. I like the grip better than the XDM even. The Glocks do not fit my hands as well. Smith does a pretty good job with the M & P series. If they get the trigger of the Shield in the whole line they will be an excellent choice. The only thing that you have to worry about is that the gun fits you and you are happy.
