By including "Colorado" I'm guessing we're talking about big (Grizzly, Brown) bears?
No. We have a lot of black bear here but you're not going to encounter Grizzlies. Not impossible but very improbable.

My suggestion is to carry the lightest handgun you own that is .38 cal or bigger. I have a S&W .38 Airweight that goes with me in the woods. I figure 5 slugs from that will persuade a bear to go elsewhere. I own a 6" S&W .44 but after 6 hours or so of trails, it gets really heavy.

My mistake, I thought there were Browns & Grizzlies in Colorado. Then a nice .44 mag revolver should do fine in Black Bear country. Even a GLOCK 20 stoked with hot (Hornady) 10mm would be an option. As for a .38 Airweight? I'll pass.

    What else do you need?

My dad carries a 357, the gunsmith he bought it from said it might do for Black bears, but a grizzley, it might do some good if you stick it in his mouth while he's chewing on you. They are not really known in Colorado. I have seen a couple black bears Elk hunting out there over the years. But, then you never know what might wonder down from other areas. 454 is next on my list. also shoots 45 long colt. I though about going all the way up to the 460, then I get 454 and 45 long colt, but I'll never be able to handle the 460, pushing my limits with the 454, for as often as I'll shoot it full bore, I'll manage.

If you are really serious, then you will carry no less than a good 44 carbine, or 45-70 carbine. Anything less and you are just fooling yourself, and engaging in a fun, but esentially worthless mental exercise.

This is sound advise. A well placed shot in your companion's leg will give you ample time to get a away. You may not even have to run.

In AK we'd carry our rifles, 338 on up, unslung with the safeties off. When they're hungry, they're sneaky and quick.

For CO, a sidearm needs to be quickly accessible. Take your pick: 440 gr hard cast from a 56 oz 500; 300gr moly from a 42 oz 45 hot Colt; or 250gr Federal Cast Core from a 20 oz titanium 41 Mag.
