Headed into "Bear Country". What should I carry with me?

Headed to bear country for some hiking in Colorado and have my carry permit all squared away so I'm planning on getting something with some serious firepower to tote along. I already have a three guns in mind but would love to hear some suggestions. Gun/Holster combo with pics if possible. Thanks everyone.

For NH I carried a Taurus .44 Mag

I assume you mean to protect yourself from 4 legged critters and not hunting

Keep your camp cleaned up and don't leave food or garbage laying around. I've had several close encounters with black bears here but have never felt really threatened. My camp gun is generally a Ruger GP100 loaded with .357 Magnums.

Use a .22 cal. From what I have read before it is not the caliber but shot placement.......

In case the bear forgets to bring his own pepper seasoning, and that way future hikers can hear the bear jingling through the woods.

By including the word "holster" I'm guessing you're asking about a handgun? By including "Colorado" I'm guessing we're talking about big (Grizzly, Brown) bears? Whew, that worries me just a tad already. It takes such a formidable handgun caliber to be even a marginally effective BIG bear stopper that I could suggest nothing less that a thick-framed .44 mag pushing heavy, hard cast ammo. Yes, big bears have been hunted with handguns. But hunting a bear and being surprised or charged by a bear while you're trout fishing are two ENTIRELY different circumstances. The bear is the prey when you're hunting. You're the prey when you're fishing. IMHO, I'd more likely trust a slug-loaded 12 gauge shotgun or a 45-70 lever action rifle than ANY handgun caliber. But a .454 Casull or 500 S&W come close. Remember, only hits count & it usually takes more than one. Good Luck!
