I'm trying to find out how old this guy is. My understanding is that you're able to tell from the serial number if you have the S&W book?

I looked in the Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson, and the semiauto serial number range shown on Page 401 for years 1973 to 1974 is A175001 to A235000. Your serial number seems to fall in the center of that range.
Congratulations on buying a good older gun. I bought a model 39 new in 1968 and still have it, shown below. I have shot it periodically for 44 years and it functions very well.
