Bought my first 45 acp- ammo suggestions

I pocket carry a Sig P238 and my nightstand gun is a 15 round Beretta PX4 Storm. I've been saving all my nickels and dimes just in case I wanted a "splurge" firearm. Well, I've always liked the appearance of the classic 1911, so I decided to buy my very first one.

Kimber Ultra Carry 2.jpg It's a Kimber Ultra Carry II chambered in .45 acp and has a 3 inch barrel. I shot one at a range a couple times so I already know it's snappy. Any suggestions on the right ammo for such a short barrel would be greatly appreciated.

Well, if it's new, you'll want to eat up some 230 gr. ball ammo first. I have the Ultra CDP II and that's what the manual said anyway. I had no problems whatsoever with any ball ammo during "break in" and no other issues with any other configurations except for the Hornady Critical Defense. The rubber tips didn't like the steep feed ramp on mine while chambering the first round so I haven't even tried shooting them. Why waste the time I figure. I have a friend that didn't have any issues with HCD and he has the same gun as you do there. However, no problems with XTPs.

Any bullet you choose will still be almost 1/2 an inch wide.

But the concern will be the three inch barrel; the Speer Gold Dot Short Barrel ammo may be the round to use, as suggested above.

I have 3 45's ( Glock 36, Colt LWT Commander XSE, and a Kimber Tactical II) I use WWB FMJ 230 gr for practice and Winchester Ranger T series when carrying. I've not have any problems.

I would probably look into the 185 grain DPX with the 3" barrel. I don't have any experience with the speer gold dot, short barrel loads, so can't comment there.

    Nice.....congrats on the new pistol!
I've always been partial to the Remington Golden Sabers in all of my previous and current 45ACP pistols. Carried the 185GR with my G30. Flawless feeding should be your ultimate concern before you even think of downrange ballistics IMO.

Golden Sabre 185gr +p has 1140fps from a 5", so it would still be pretty quick from a 3", though the recoil tends to be pretty snappy, even in a full-size.

I like the Federal 230 gr HST for my carry ammo. For range use, either WWB or Federal Champion also in 230 gr.

I carry 230g. Win. Ranger T's in my 1911, but I own Govt. Models. I would advise running at least 200 rounds of ball through the gun to mate up the parts and then testing some of the various HP ammo for function if the FMJ's go reliably. After breaking in a 1911 and verifying carry ammo it always makes me feel secure if it will run with Speer 200g. ashtrays.
