'New' Speer Gold Dot JHP for SB 405's ?

Anyone tried the 'new' Speer Gold Dot, 230 grain Jacketed Hollow Point ammo made specifically for short barreled 45's ?

Don't know how 'new' it is, I've called several gunshops and they don't carry it yet.

    Speer product number is 23975.

Anyone know a good web site to buy it ? I usually buy from Natchezz and they don't show it on their web site.

Mods... just noticed I should have put this in the ammo section, my apologies. Feel free to move it of need be. Thanks.

Found some at a gun shop about 25 miles away. They will have to order it, probably be in by next week so I can head for the range and try it out. Not as new as I thought, but also not widely available either. It actually came out in 2004.

I have not been able to locate any near me.
I wanted to buy some to test in my Glock-G36 and nobody had any when I called around asking for it.
Hopefully, I'll be able to check some out soon.

It's crazy how CCI Speer does not have the SB ammo specs on their web site.

I got some from Midway. I use it as my carry ammo. It has worked flawlessly in my Ultra CDP. It was accurate and seems like good stuff. I haven't done any ballistics tests on it however.

Haven't tried their loaded short barrel ammo, but have purchased the #4482 bullets that they use. I'll do a range report when I begin loading and testing them, but that probably won't be until sometime next month......Bob

Edited to add: The loaded ammo from a 4" barrel, as listed at Midway USA.

    Velocity, 820 fps.
    Muzzle energy, 343 ft.lbs.

That is what I carry in my Glock 30! The above chart shows why

Midway USA is out of stock right now, but they are expecting them to be in 10/4.

Just some info for ya. I love Speer gold dot and generally order my ammo from Midway. I shoot 124gr. +P from my Springfield XD Sub-Compact and was in need of some additional rounds. When I went to midway they had my desired rounds in both the standard and the Short barrel versions. My delima was that the standard rounds were on sale (aprox $1.75 cheaper). Obviously I was curious if the SB rounds were truly better for SB guns. I went to their site and the only difference I could see was the ballistics were performed from a 3" barrel vs 4". So i was a bit frustrated and called Speer to get the low down. The explained the situation to the lady on the other end an she stated that I should buy the rounds that were on sale because the ballistic difference between the two rounds was so minor that I probably would never be able to tell the diff between the two. I asked her if the only real difference is the loads are ballisticly tested from a 3" barrel but she wouldn't really say. I imagine they might be loaded a little more hot then standard rounds to get the added velocity from a SB but that's just speculation on my part.

I dont believe added velocity is what the Short bbl Gold Dots are all about. The bullet itself has been redesigned with a larger cavity which allows proper expansion and penetration at the lower velocities short bbl guns provide. If the chart I posted is accurate and the bullet penetrates the same 14.5" through gelatin, heavy clothing and gelatin, and 4 layers of ballistic demin and gelatin, expands to at least .731" with all, and retains 100% of it's weight with all, I would say it's more than adequate for defensive use.

    yellowv,

Thanks for posting that chart. Very informative.

Along with a couple of boxes for my Kimber Tactical Ultra II, I also ordered a box of the SB for my snubby 357 to see if I can tell any difference.

No problem. I think my buddy and I might make up some gelatin blocks for the next time we go to the range. If we do I will see how they really work and I will be sure to post pics.
