XDs vs. Shield - which one is smaller?

The XDs holds 5 rounds of .45 ACP while the Shield holds 7 rounds of 9mm. These two mini powerhouses are nearly identical in size. For all practical purposes, you couldn't say one was significantly smaller than the other - they're going to carry very similarly.

Stay tuned for a full video review of the new XDs.

The XDs looks smaller, and yet packs a much more powerful round. The choice seems obvious to me (why I bought one) and if you really want more capacity and can give up a little size, you can get an extended 7 round mag that will fit all your fingers

The 7 round magazine adds 2 rounds, of course, it it also makes the pistols as big as a full-sized handgun. At that point you might as well buy a full-size XD and double your magazine capacity. I'm of the opinion these little guys should be carried with their concealment mags otherwise they have little value.

Here's a pic of the XDs with and without its 7 round magazine.

If you are going to leave the house with only 5 or 6 rounds in your gun, why not go for a .357 mag? I like having the extra two rounds the Shield offers.

That's not true. Sure, the length may be the same as a full size, but the grip and slide are much more thin, and the entire weapon is lighter

I have an XDs, a Walther PPS, and a Glock 26 and carry each with a flush fit magazine. That is 5, 6, and 10 respectively. The backup mag, you are carrying at least one extra mag aren't you, is larger. The XDs gets a 7 rounder as the extra, the PPS gets an 8 rounder, and the my Glock can get up to a 15 round mag from my 19. That way I get the smallest carry option and have a extra rounds.

That's what I do, but your mileage may vary.

    Cheers

I disagree. Width is easier to hide than length. Width becomes more of an issue with comfort if you're carrying IWB, at least in my experience.

I've got the 40 Shield but 45 is kind of my valentine. I almost swapped the Shield to get into an XDs but I'm so durn happy with the way the 40 shoots that I'd be an idiot to lose the gun.

But I'm gonna get that 45 anyway.......

I'd carry the XD with the five round mag for concealment sake, and carry the seven rounder as back up...
