Is converting an M&P 40 Shield to 9mm safe?
Hey there,
I'm on the waiting list for an M&P Shield in 9mm, but after hearing more and more people converting their M&P 40's to 9mm I'm wondering if I should get the .40 and just get a 9mm factory barrel and mag's to go with the .40 instead?
Does this effect the accuracy, and or reliability? The reason I'm getting the Shield 9mm is for my wife to CC it, but we just figured if we could get multiple calibers out of it then why not. But the primary reason the pistol will serve is to be a 9mm carry weapon for the wife.
Thanks for your input

You'd need to check to insure the barrel to slide fit. I'm just guessing, but I would think the 9mm barrel is smaller then the .40, so you may need a barrel/slide combo. Possibly an after market barrel designed for the conversion would fit the slide.

Not familiar intricately with this particular gun, but unless S&W sanctions this change and makes OEM parts to facilitate the change, I definitely would not embark on that venture. You are talking different caliber bullet, different diameter case, different pressures, etc, etc. Not the same as switching say, .40 S&W to .357 SIG.
Be safe and just buy a 9mm if you want that caliber as well.

Does anybody make a conversion kit for this gun yet? I know Stormlake makes one for the M&P compacts. I had a M&P40c and bought one of their barrels to convert to a .357 sig that worked perfectly. I wouldn't just buy parts and try to make them work.
